Newcastle Jets looking to swap two Sydney FC players for veteran David Carney
OLYROO Andrew Hoole and Sydney FC teammate Chris Naumoff are believed to be at the centre of negotiations between Sydney and the Newcastle Jets over a player swap deal.
OLYROO Andrew Hoole and Sydney FC teammate Chris Naumoff are believed to be at the centre of negotiations between Sydney and the Newcastle Jets over a player swap deal that could deliver Jets veteran David Carney to the Sky Blues for the remainder of the season.
Carney’s future has been under a cloud for more than a week with Jets management not prepared to guarantee the 32 year old a place in their squad beyond the end of the season.
It has opened the door for rival clubs to sign the former Socceroo with Sydney coach Graham Arnold keen to get Carney on board immediately so that he is available for the club’s Asia Champions League campaign.
But before agreeing to release Carney, the Jets want something in return with talks last weekend centring around a player swap arrangement that would appease both parties.
The Daily Telegraph has learnt Newcastle wants at least two players as compensation for the loss of Carney with Hoole, who only joined Sydney from the Jets this season, and Naumoff believed to be among the players discussed.
Hoole’s Olyroo teammate Alex Gersbach was also understood to be on Newcastle’s wish list but was rejected with the defender strongly linked to a move to a Denmark club.
Talks are said to be on hold until after Sydney’s clash with Melbourne Victory on Tuesday night with
the success of the negotiations likely to hinge on whether Hoole and Naumoff agree to the move and can reach an agreement with the Jets.
Neither club has been prepared to discuss the negotiations but Jets CEO David Eland did confirm on Saturday there had been correspondence between the clubs regarding a potential player swap involving Carney.
Bringing local junior Hoole back to Newcastle would be viewed as a positive by long-suffering Jets fans if it was to happen.
