Melbourne Victory star Carl Valeri laid low by inflammatory condition affecting his brain

AN inflammatory condition affecting part of his brain has been uncovered as the reason for Melbourne Victory skipper Carl Valeri’s recent illness.

Coach Kevin Muscat revealed last week that the club was concerned for the midfielder’s immediate playing future as a result of the then-mystery illness.

Preliminary tests have revealed that the condition is affecting his brain, with more results to become available in a fortnight, but Victory’s club doctor has said that early treatment has proved positive.

“Carl developed a medical condition two weeks ago that affects his balance and co-ordination. He had a viral upper respiratory tract infection in the week leading up to this,” Dr Krishant Naidu said.

“He has had specialist reviews with an ear, nose and throat surgeon and a neurologist with extensive investigations. To date, these have revealed an inflammatory condition affecting part of his brain.

“The complete results of these tests will not be known for at least a further two weeks.

“These results will likely elucidate the exact nature of this illness.

“Carl has had treatment for the inflammation and has responded with improvement in his balance and co-ordination..”

Asked whether Valeri would play again this season, Muscat said: “Yes (I do). Because I’m an optimist”

“He’s out indefinitely. At this point in time there’s no point trying to assume how long that will be.

“We’re very concerned but optimistic he’ll be fine.

“When he’s able to train and get back out there time will tell.

“He’s making progress as well. He came to the club yesterday and was in good spirits.

“He’s able to walk and he drove in yesterday. He’s in the best possible care. Our concerns are with Carl and his wellbeing.”
