Jack Clisby says Melbourne City unfazed by loss to Brisbane Roar

KEEPER Thomas Sorensen’s last-ditch attempt to rescue a point at Brisbane Roar reflects the bold new Melbourne City, defender Jack Clisby has said.

Trailing 2-1 deep into stoppage time on Sunday night, Sorensen went forward in search of an equaliser and won a header from Aaron Mooy’s corner, before Roar countered and Henrique fired into an empty net from halfway.

Clisby, who was lurking alongside Sorensen, said the players responded after a poor first half.

“We were chasing the game. At this point, goal difference is not really a concern for us, it’s more the result. So, we brought Thomas up for the corner but the ball fell for them,’’ he said.

“He got a touch on it, it went a bit to his right ... (but) if it was straight it would have fallen to me and I may have had my first A-League goal.

“Our second-half performance shows good character, fight and togetherness.

“We were pretty slack the first half, we weren’t stringing passes together and gave away too many cheap balls and were lucky not to be down more.

“We turned it around and took the game to them, got an early goal and put a lot of pressure on them.’’

City hosts Sydney FC on Saturday night at AAMI Park in a huge game, with the home team only ahead in third on goal difference.

Clisby is confident City, with higher expectations all round, has built a solid foundation from which to progress.

“Melbourne City is a club everyone recognises as part of the City Football Group; we’re growing and looking to push forward,’’ he said.

“We’re not halfway through (the season) and, while we could’ve leapfrogged Roar with a win, we’re six points off top and in a much better position than last year.

“We’ll keep kicking on, we can’t wait to get back out against Sydney, we want that winning feeling again. It’s another tough game. It’s good to be back at home and we’ll look to turn things around.”
