THE future of Wanderers marquee Federico Piovaccari remains unclear despite coach Tony Popovic insisting that the player is not about to be released immediately.
Scorer of only two goals in 12 games, Piovaccari was left out of Western Sydney’s squad for Saturday’s trip to the Mariners, a week after being dropped to the bench for the derby.
Though Popovic said after the game that he could “knock on the head” rumours that Piovaccari won’t play for the club again, the Wanderers coach also made clear how far his striker has slipped down the club’s pecking order.
Brendon Santalab is fit again and it’s understood the club is considering a couple of options to sign as a guest player, leaving Piovaccari to consider what his future at the club might hold.
“He wasn’t selected for this game,” Popovic said.
“He’s fit, but I went with a different 17 players. It’s up to him to work his way back into the team.
SANTA’S BACK: striker hoping for extended Wanderers run
“We have a good squad, a lot of players fighting for positions. We’re on top at the moment, and everyone wants to be a part of it.
“There will be players who are disappointed and left out. This week it’s Pio (Piovaccari), whether it’s next week or not we’ll have to wait and see.”
