Eugene Galekovic says Adelaide United can climb into the top six with victory over Perth Glory

AVID fisherman Eugene Galekovic says the sea enables him time to define his thoughts as the Adelaide United skipper plots Perth Glory’s downfall on Saturday night.

AVID fisherman Eugene Galekovic says the sea enables him time to define his thoughts as the Adelaide United skipper plots Perth Glory’s downfall on Saturday night.

Galekovic adores the calm surrounding him when he launches his boat from West Beach or, if time allows, near Normanville to fish.

“I went out last week and got a few whiting and squid,’’ Galekovic said.

“It’s just a fishing boat and when I have a day off after recovery, I’ll head out. Sometimes I go by myself. I just like to fish and since I arrived (in 2007) I’ve been into it.”

Galekovic hopes Glory will take the bait in an important clash which could determine whether United is ready to take on the top six.

After Adelaide lost 3-1 to Glory in Perth during its horror run which saw the Reds jag just three points in eight matches, the return match in Adelaide last month saw United turn the tide in a 1-0 win.

Since that December 6 clash, Adelaide lifted itself off the bottom of the A-League table, has only conceded once in the past five matches and is yet to taste defeat.

Galekovic believes Adelaide has built all the foundations to have a good second half of the season with United now just a point away from sixth spot.

“When you’re getting results and not conceding, the main thing is to try and keep that momentum going,’’ Galekovic said.

“Defensively we’re very strong and we’re giving ourselves a chance now to get something from games and that’s been our main focus for a while now.

“If we keep doing that I believe we’ve got the firepower to score goals to win games.”

Adelaide has scored the second fewest goals (13) this season but is still four goals better than ultra-defensive Newcastle Jets.

“If we win on the weekend we could be in the top six for the first time (this season) and it gives the boys a lot more confidence,’’ Galekovic said.

“They (Glory) scored three goals against us last time but in saying that we’ve reached a bit of form but they have, too.”

Galekovic said competition for spots had made training more intense, with injured duo Eli Babalj and Iacopo La Rocca up for selection.
