Brisbane Roar set to try to re-sign homesick Tommy Oar

BRISBANE Roar are poised to make a play for homesick attacking weapon Tommy Oar, who has left English Championship club Ipswich.

BRISBANE Roar are poised to make a play for homesick attacking weapon Tommy Oar.

The former Roar prodigy has parted ways with Ipswich Town after just five months at the English Championship club.

The 24-year-old Gold Coast product made his A-League debut for the Roar in 2008 before being sold in 2010 to Dutch club FC Utrecht, where he spent five years before moving to Ipswich.

Oar has found the going tough in the United Kingdom and asked to be released from his contract.

“While I have enjoyed playing for Ipswich, I have found it difficult to settle into life in England,” Oar told the Ipswich Town website

“I have been away from home for five or six years now. My family came over at Christmas and maybe I’ve got to a point where I want to be closer to home again.

“It’s just one of those things where moving over here as not worked out as I had hoped.”

Keen to improve their attacking depth, the Roar are understood to be interested in bringing Oar home during the current transfer window.

They have sufficient space in their salary cap and a spot available in their A-League roster.

Roar coach John Aloisi and the club’s football operations manager Craig Moore are big fans of Oar, who has made 28 appearances for the Socceroos and was a part of Australia’s 2015 Asian Cup-winning squad.

Should the Roar elect to wait until the off-season to sign Oar, they would most likely be beaten to the punch by other A-League clubs in the current transfer period.
