FORMER Socceroo David Carney is poised for one final payday in his career, with a Qatari club ready to launch a bid for the Newcastle Jets winger in the January transfer window.
It’s believed the unnamed club is willing to pay a transfer fee to secure Carney’s release next month. Carney has been one of Newcastle’s standout players in an impressive season for the club.
It’s likely that Jets coach Scott Miller would be unwilling to contemplate losing Carney in the middle of the season, but the 32-year-old is only contracted until the end of this season and could leave at that point for nothing.
A move to the Middle East would add another leg to Carney’s much-travelled career, which has seen him play in England, Holland, Spain, Uzbekistan and the US, as well as 48 times for his country.
His form this season for Newcastle has been a far cry from his circumstances last season, when he was one of several senior players told to leave by then owner Nathan Tinkler.
Carney was told his contract had been terminated for breaches of discipline, but had that thrown out by the A-League’s independent arbiter and waited for a change of regime at the club in order to re-establish himself.
Carney’s manager, Paddy Dominguez, declined to comment on the speculation, saying only that the player “remains contracted to Newcastle, and all inquiries need to be dealt with by them”.
A spokesman for the Jets said it was the club’s policy not to publicly discuss individual players’ movements into or out of the club.
