1. Federico Piovaccari is costing goals.

The Italian striker is clearly fitter than he was, and uses his body strength well. But in the end he keeps missing chances, and goals are supposed to be his currency.

2. Eugene Galekovic remains a class act.

The Adelaide captain is one of the least showy goalkeepers in the A-League, but one of its most consistent, and leads by example for United.

3. New Year is a fresh start for everyone.

The absence of a mobile custody unit at Pirtek Stadium set the tone for a night when the police were laughing and joking with fans. Keep it up, on both sides.

4. Adelaide will be in the finals.

Despite their woeful start to the season, the confidence is flowing again and they remain a technically accomplished side who deserved a point in the end.

5. The little details matter.

Getting names right, for instance — at the league’s most multicultural club, how hard is it for the stadium announcer to get pronunciations of the opposition players right?
