Spanish cyclist Eloy Teruel accidentally celebrates Tour of California ‘win’ too soon

SPANISH cyclist Eloy Teruel raised his arms in triumph in the seventh Tour of California stage, only to realise he had a lap to go.

Spanish cyclist Eloy Teruel was left red faced after prematurely celebrating a stage win on the Tour of California, not realising he had another lap to go. He finished 56th.

SPANISH cyclist Eloy Teruel raised his arms in triumph in the seventh Tour of California stage, only to realise he had a lap to go.

The sportsman screamed and pumped his fists as he crossed the presumptive finish line in the Pasadena event. Unfortunately he had a five-kilometre circuit yet to complete.

Announcers and fans tried to indicate to Teruel there was still a lap left, but he failed to understand until he turned around to see the rest of the field gaining on him.

The Spaniard may not have taken the stage but he retained his sense of humour, tweeting: “I wanted to win, luckily no one has seen. Hahahahaha.”

Slovakia’s Peter Sagan went on to win the seventh stage. The overall winner of the Tour was former Tour de France victor Bradley Wiggins.
