Young cycling fan David McCarthy earned himself a legion of online haters when he snapped an opportune photo at the Giro d’Italia with sprinter Marcel Kittel, who had collapsed off his bike in agony at the end of a stage.

The moment was also captured by photographer Kristof Ramon and that image also found its way onto Instagram.

McCarthy posted the original photo to his Instagram account and quickly came under fire from the cycling community, prompting him to remove the photo and issue an apology.

Kittel later withdrew before the fourth stage of the Giro, citing a severe fever.
