Aussie cyclist Patrick Eddy’s race completely ruined by spectator’s flag

An Australian cyclist has endured a nightmare during the final stage of an event thanks to one spectator and their flag.

Australian cyclist Patrick Eddy has had a potential stage victory stolen from him thanks to a roadside spectator.

In the final stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi in Kuala Lumpur, the Picnic PostNL rider attempted to make a break from the peloton with around 20 kilometres to go.

Eddy was given the green light from his team to go on the offensive, and he quickly set about chasing down teammate Oliver Peace and Equipo Kern Pharma’s Nil Gimeno.

“I got the green light to go on the attack if I wanted to, and I did a good effort over that first climb,” said Eddy. “And then I attacked solo in the descent.

But as he was about to close the gap to the two out in front, disaster struck thanks to a fan’s flag that was hanging out in front of the road.

The Malaysian flag collided with the Aussie’s front wheel and was ripped out of the spectator’s hands before wrapping itself around his front tyre like a python.

The flag made it impossible for the 22-year-old to continue as he simply had to sit and watch as his rivals not only caught him, but left him stranded as he waited for a team car.

Despite the moment ruining his day, the Aussie wasn’t dismayed by what had unfolded. Simply putting it down to just another day on the road.

“I felt really good and I also don’t get the green light so often to race for my own results,” he said.

“And that’s also OK, but when you can and it doesn’t go to plan, or something out of your control stops you from getting a big result of course, it’s frustrating. But that’s cycling.”

Helping ease the frustration for Eddy is the fact that despite not securing the stage win, he walked away with the mountains jersey from the event.

The result for the rising Aussie comes after he made his debut at the Vuelta a España earlier this year.
