Waleed Aly slammed for tone deaf dig, mistaking Aussie women’s cricket captain for teammate

Waleed Aly has been slammed for making a tone deaf dig and mistaking an Aussie cricket star for her teammate in a car crash interview.

Aussies beat SA to retain T20 crown!

Waleed Aly has been roundly slammed for mistaking the captain of the Australian women’s cricket team for one of her teammates during an interview on The Project.

Aly was speaking to Meg Lanning on Monday night after Australia defeated South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup to add another trophy to their overflowing cabinet.

Australia went undefeated throughout the tournament and Aly raised the 97-run win over New Zealand in the group stage as a sign of the Aussies’ dominance.

Aly said to Lanning: “Meg stop sharing the credit around, this is about you because you took 5/12 against New Zealand and you were Australia’s second-highest scorer, were you playing in the under 12s?”

The only problem was Lanning doesn’t bowl for Australia and the bowling figures Aly cited actually belonged to Ash Gardner, who was named player of the tournament.

The all-rounder was recently snapped up by the Gujarat Giants for A$558,000 in the inaugural women’s Indian Premier League auction.

Viewers and cricket fans were also left unimpressed by Aly comparing women’s cricket to “under 12s”, considering the progress the game has made in recent years.

Lanning didn’t correct Aly for confusing her with Gardner and diplomatically deflected his under 12s dig.

“Ah no (it wasn’t an under 12s standard),” she said.

“I think it was a tougher tournament than it came across as. We were put under the pump a fair bit and we were able to respond.

“That’s the best part about this group, we really thrive under pressure when things get a little bit tough and we are able to come through.”

And it’s safe to say Aly’s lack of attention to detail went down like a led balloon with viewers.

CODE Sports’ Lachlan McKirdy tweeted: “Great seeing Meg Lanning on The Project, but don’t know if Waleed Aly talking about their win over New Zealand in the group stage and saying “it was like under-12s cricket” is the compliment he thinks it is.

“Not only does he get it wrong saying Meg took five wickets (that was Ash Gardner), the good ol’ throwaway ‘were you playing in the under 12s?’.”

Australia’s women’s cricket team has now won six of the last eight T20 World Cups.

In the last 12 months, they have won the ODI World Cup, Commonwealth Games gold and the T20 World Cup.

It’s an unparalleled level of domination that many believe would have warranted at least a nomination for the team of the year gong at the prestigious Laureus Awards.

But alas, it seems our all-conquering Aussie women are still searching for respect at home and abroad.
