Jason Gillespie holds talks with Andrew Strauss over England job ahead of Ashes series

FORMER Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie has held talks with Andrew Strauss about succeeding Peter Moores as England coach.

FORMER Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie revealed on Friday that he has held talks with Andrew Strauss about succeeding Peter Moores as England coach.

Gillespie, currently coaching English county champions Yorkshire, is a leading contender to replace the sacked Moores and has been confirmed as “one of the candidates” by Strauss, who was recently appointed as the England and Wales Cricket Board’s new director of cricket.

Paul Farbrace has been handed the head coaching position for England’s current two-Test series against New Zealand.

But, with time running out to find a permanent successor before the Ashes series against Australia begins in July, former England captain Strauss has no qualms about turning to an Australian coach as he tries to revive a team in turmoil following a dismal World Cup campaign and lacklustre drawn Test series in the West Indies.

Gillespie has claimed Yorkshire is his “dream job” but reports emerged on Wednesday that the ECB had been in touch and Gillespie confirmed that on Friday.

“I’ve spoken to Andrew and the ECB about the vacant position,” he told Sky Sports News.

“They made it very clear they’re chatting to a number of people of interest, so they’ll let us know what the process is in due course. At this stage there’s nothing more to say.

“It was face-to-face (with Strauss), and we had a good chat and we’ll see what pans out from there.”
