Australia reacts as X-rated stump mic swear comes through crystal clear

The stump mic has given Australia some hilarious cricket moments in recent years but it’s caught out one of the star’s of Day 2 at the Gabba.

Travis Head hit his first Ashes century and the third of his Test match cricket career on Thursday as he helped Australia put England to the sword.

After a strong platform was set, the bottom fell out around Head as wickets fell regularly.

But the South Australia star, who was in no means a lock before the match, paid the selectors back for their faith in a brilliant 85-ball century.

The speed of the century equalled Joe Darling in 1898 as the second fastest centurion for Australia in an Ashes Test, beaten only by Adam Gilchrist’s 57-ball ton in 2006.

He flew to 50 off a run a ball and galloped on to bring up the three figures in quick and brutal fashion against an England side who had been given a sniff only to have it taken away from them.

But like every Test century, it’s never always smooth sailing.

When he was on 86, the 73rd ball he faced saw Head’s eyes light up as he lined up a short length ball outside off-stump, only for a big swing and a miss.

“Oh you c***,” came through in the stump mic, and the commentators on Fox Cricket just continued on their way and ignored the gaffe.

Language warning

But it didn’t escape the attention of social media as many people has to clear out their ears.

The Daily Telegraph’s sports editor James Silver wrote: “Travis Head going all Brandon Smith in the final session #ohyoucbomb”.

Code Sports’ Brendan Bradford posted: “Did Head just say what I think he said??”

The Roar’s editor Tony Harper tweeted: “’Oh you’ what? Head wasn’t the only one who let that through to the keeper. Some admirable restraint from Warne and Waugh after that C bomb.”

ESPN’s Matt Walsh added: “Travis Head stump mic slip”.

As frustrated as Head was about the one missed shot, it was nothing to what England felt as the South Australia cruised to his rapid century.

The outpouring of emotion was brilliant from Head as he brought his great domestic form into the Test arena.

However, Head was also in the wars, facing a brutal blow to his forearm early in his innings, before being hit with a beamer late in the day that Mark Waugh called “one of the worst beamers I’ve seen”.
