‘That’s just selfish’: Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis shamed for ‘horrible’ review

Aussie cricketer Marcus Stoinis has been blasted after leaving his teammates with no reviews against New Zealand on Thursday.

What on earth were you thinking, Marcus Stoinis?

The Australian all-rounder has come under heavy scrutiny following a “shocking” review for LBW during the second ODI against New Zealand in Cairns.

The hosts were reeling at 3/22 on Thursday afternoon when Stoinis joined teammate Steve Smith in the middle in the seventh over, but the 33-year-old didn’t stay for long.

New Zealander seamer Trent Boult got the Kookaburra to swing back viciously into the right-handed Stoinis, trapping him on the front pad.

It was absolutely plumb, and umpire Rod Tucker quickly raised the dreaded finger.

But after a short consultation with Smith at the non-striker’s end, Stoinis called for the DRS technology in what can only be described as a desperate Hail Mary.

And the decision backfired spectacularly, with Hawkeye replays suggesting the ball would have struck halfway up middle stump.

Stoinis sheepishly made his way back to the pavilion for a duck, and because Marnus Labuschagne had botched a review earlier in the Powerplay, the Australians were left with no unsuccessful reviews for the rest of their innings.

“That is a shocking review,” former Australian batter Mark Waugh said on Fox Cricket.

“Stone dead. That‘s just a waste and, once again, you have to say that’s naive batting.

“Yes, it’s a good ball but it’s an ODI, you know what Trent Boult is going to bowl. That’s as plumb as it gets. That’s where Smith should say, ‘No, that’s absolutely dead. Sorry, you’re out.’

“To me it shows signs of selfishness when players are reviewing when you know you’re out. That’s just selfish.”

Stoinis has not reached double figures in three consecutive knocks, scoring 5 in the series opener against New Zealand and 3 in last week’s embarrassing loss to Zimbabwe in Townsville.

The West Australian has not scored a fifty in his last 28 ODIs, averaging 17.85 for Australia in the 50-over format since April 2019.

Incredibly, he has never scored a half-century in an Australian victory across all formats.

As young all-rounder Cameron Green continues to impress with bat and ball, national selectors will question whether it’s worth persisting with Stoinis ahead of next year’s World Cup in India.

Lowest ODI average for Australian top-order batters

24.00 - Kim Hughes

27.61 - Stuart Law

27.62 - Marcus Stoinis

30.61 - Allan Border

31.92 - Mitchell Marsh

* Minimum 45 innings at 1-6 in batting order

Australia’s top-order crumbled once again at Cazalys Stadium on Thursday afternoon, with four batters in the top five dismissed in singles figures.

Black Caps seamer Matt Henry removed captain Aaron Finch and opening partner David Warner in quick succession before Boult rolled through the Australia middle-order.

“I can’t believe this is Australia I’m watching,” former New Zealand wicketkeeper Ian Smith said on Fox Cricket.

“I’ll be honest with you. It’s three times in a row. I simply find it quite astounding.”

But as wickets tumbled around him, Smith brought up the 27th fifty of his ODI career in 83 deliveries to frustrate New Zealand’s classy bowling attack.

The 33-year-old eventually departed for 61 to leave Australia in dire straits at 8/117 in the 37th over.
