New South Wales leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha has been ruled out of the remainder of this week’s Sheffield Shield clash against Western Australia after suffering mild concussion on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old exhibited mild concussion symptoms while in the field late on day one of the first-class contest, and will undergo further testing over coming days.

Sangha, who had figures of 0/50 from 18 overs on day one at Bankstown Oval, will be replaced by concussion substitute Riley Ayre, who makes his first-class debut for the Blues.

The Randwick Petersham left-arm orthodox spinner subsequently becomes the 759th cricketer to represent New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield.

Sangha has taken 14 wickets at 26.14 since making his first-class debut for the Blues in October, claiming career-best figures of 3/44 against Victoria at Drummoyne Oval.

Queensland’s Matt Kuhnemann is the only spin bowler who has claimed more Sheffield Shield wickets this summer.

Sangha was named in Australia’s white-ball squad for tours of New Zealand and the West Indies last year, but is yet to make his international debut.

The leg-spinner has starred for the Sydney Thunder over the last two Big Bash League seasons, snaring 37 scalps in 27 matches at 17.89.

The only spin bowler with more BBL wickets at a better average is Afghanistan international Rashid Khan, who was recently named ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Decade.

West Australian opener Cameron Bancroft brought up his first century of the Sheffield Shield season on Tuesday, scoring 117 against a classy Blues bowling attack in Sydney.

The right-hander cracked nine boundaries in a patient knock that lasted 262 deliveries before he was dismissed by former Australian seamer Chris Tremain late in the evening session.

Veteran batter Shaun Marsh scored 58, combining with Bancroft for a 141-run partnership for the second wicket.

“NSW bowled really well so I had to work hard for runs,” Bancroft said at stumps.

“It is a wicket that is obviously quite slow with not a lot of sideways movement but there was enough variation to make it difficult.

“The outfield is really slow as well which doesn’t help and I think spin will play more of a role as the game goes on.”

Western Australia was 3/231 at stumps with Hilton Cartwright and Josh Philippe undefeated at the crease on 29 and 5 respectively.

The start of day two at Bankstown Oval was delayed due to rain.
