Test spinner Matt Kuhnemann will be back bowling for the first time since being cleared of an illegal action after being named in Tasmania’s squad for Thursday’s Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland in Hobart.

Kuhnemann endured weeks of uncertainty after his action was reported by match officials during the second Test in Sri Lanka, a series in which the left-armer took 16 wickets, the most in the two matches.

He was forced to undergo testing at the at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane in front of a member of the ICC’s panel of human movement specialists over several hours before finally being cleared to resume bowling.

Kuhnemann said it was a “fair” process but one he didn’t believe he should have had to go through.

“It was a disappointing way to finish what was such a successful Test series for Australia. I’ve never doubted my bowling action throughout my career,” he said in a statement.

“I thought the process itself was quite fair and I appreciated the professional manner in which testing was explained to me and then conducted.”

Tasmanian captain Jordan Silk said the impact Kuhnemann had had in his first year playing for the state had been profound, having taken 18 wickets in six games, and could be again.

“It’s not lost on us his effect in that first half of the season, although it feels a little bit a while ago now,” Silk said.

“But he’s been a vital cog in that attack. Just being able to control the scoreboard at times but also his ability to take wickets,

“He’s been great to have around for the most part of the season. We look forward to having him back off the back of obviously a great couple of weeks in Sri Lanka for him.”
