Pat Cummins named new ODI skipper as CA considers David Warner’s ban

Cricket Australia has named its new ODI captain, but there are growing calls for changes to be made after a key player wasn’t considered for the role.

Pat Cummins has replaced Aaron Finch as Australia’s ODI captain, with David Warner not considered as Cricket Australia mulls over a decision to change its code of conduct to overturn his lifetime leadership ban.

Cummins is the first fast bowler to lead the men’s ODI side and will add to his Test responsibilities that he inherited from Tim Paine following last year’s sexting scandal.

No vice-captain has been named but there is no shortage of leaders in the team, with Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell and Mitch Marsh all boasting captaincy experience.

“Pat has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the Test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India,” national selector George Bailey said.

The decision to appoint Cummins comes after Finch announced his retirement from the 50-over format earlier in the year.

Australia’s next ODI series is at home against England next month, with matches in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.

Cummins will have 12 months to ready the side for the World Cup in India, and by that time, Cricket Australia will have made a call on whether Warner is allowed to be up for any future leadership roles.

Finch remains in charge of the T20 side, which begins its World Cup defence at home on Saturday against New Zealand.
