Ex-Bulls quick Brendan Doggett delivered on his intention to torment his former teammates in South Australia’s dismantling of Queensland’s batting order at Adelaide Oval on Friday.

Having moved to the Redbacks from the Bulls in the off-season, Doggett was superb on day one of the Sheffield Shield clash, taking 3-25 off 14.1 overs to help dismiss Queensland for just 152.

In reply, the Redbacks – who won the toss and elected to field – were 2-89, with Henry Hunt and Travis Head unbeaten on 37 and 28 respectively.

Doggett’s victims included Test star Marnus Labuschagne (8) and former Test opener Joe Burns (48).

Burns was the best of the Bulls’ batsman, with ex-Test duo Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw (3) both failing to fire.

“It’s fair to say I’ve bowled a lot of balls (in the nets) to these boys in the past, but it’s always different when you’re out there in the middle,” said Doggett, who admitted it was “weird” playing against the Bulls.

“It doesn’t feel real to be honest because I spent so many years with these boys in the nets and playing alongside them.

“There’s a lot of passion there. I definitely want to beat them. I want get one over them.

“I’m just happy to be here and be part of it. We’ve got a great team and a really good bowling attack. We all worked really well together today and everyone did their job”

That included Doggett’s fellow paceman Daniel Worrall, who finished with the figures of 4-49.

“The wicket dictates how the game’s going to unfold and fortunately there was little bit in it and we were able to put the ball in the right areas, and we got the rewards,” Doggett said.

“It was a big middle session for us and we were able to finish it in the last one.

“There’s still a lot in the game left, but we’ve got 50-odd to get before we take the lead, so hopefully we can try to get through tomorrow (Saturday) morning ... and then cash in later in the day and try to set up the game for us to win with the ball.”

Queenslander Burns said the Bulls needed to be prepared to bat for longer periods after they threw away a good start that had them at 1-78 in the 27th over before the key wicket of Labuschagne fell.

“They outlasted us with patience and that’s what we pride ourselves on, so that was the disappointing thing with that middle session,” Burns said.
