‘No place in our game’: English cricket team apologises for ‘sad’ Ashes-inspired dismissal

The Jonny Bairstow dismissal has been the talk of the Ashes, and a moment in lower levels of England cricket proves cricket has lost the plot.

Head's heroics helps set 251 for England victory

The Jonny Bairstow dismissal is permeating throughout all levels of cricket, and it’s just getting silly now.

Alex Carey’s stumping of Bairstow on the final day of a frenetic second Test at Lord’s has been the talk of the cricket world for the past week.

Australia defended the dismissal, stating that it was well within the aws of the game and pointing out Bairstow had been frequently leaving his crease before Carey threw down the stumps.

It’s sparked a debate over whether such a dismissal is in the spirit of the game, with Piers Morgan arguing the Aussies should be ashamed of themselves.

Well, this run out in a Yorkshire Premier League North competition certainly wasn’t in the spirit of cricket.

English sports reporter David Coverdale shared vision of the controversial run out in a match between York and Sessay, tweeting: “Spirit of cricket?

“A week after the row at Lord’s, another dead ball controversy in the Yorkshire Premier League North today, as a player is run out on his way to congratulating his team-mate’s 50…”

The vision shows a batter running an easy single to reach his half century, while his partner at the strikers’ end turned to congratulate him on the milestone after completing the run.

As the ball slowly made its way back, the fielder taunted the batter, waiting an eternity for him to commit to walking down the pitch before throwing the ball to the wicketkeeper, who ran him out.

Many cricket fans couldn’t believe the dismissal was allowed and the umpires didn’t intervene to call the ball dead.

One person commented: “That ball was so dead they had to have an archaeological dead to find it.”

It appears the fielding team later issued an official apology apologised for the dismissal.

Sessay cricket administrator Keith Houlston replied: “Matter closed now, York have apologised officially, we have accepted it and we move on.”

Video of the run out went viral, and the reactions were as expected.

Sports reporter Mark Gottlieb tweeted: “How many of these blokes do you reckon have spent the last week calling Australia cheats?”

Former cricketer Fabian Crowley said: “As a player you know if you’re pushing the line. This is blatant and pathetic. Apology or no apology from said club, this has no place in our game.”

The cricketfirst account posted: “Inevitable after Carey/Bairstow, and very very sad.”

While Bairstow’s own keeping skills have been questioned, he was mocked by the Canberra Raiders in the NRL with a creative try celebration on Friday night.
