Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell hasn’t been performing at his best in the T20 series against New Zealand, and the Dunedin crowd made sure to let him know.

During Thursday afternoon’s 20-over match at University Oval, the local spectators were seemingly giving the Victorian some words of advice while he fielded on the boundary rope in New Zealand’s innings.

After claiming a regulation catch to remove Black Caps all-rounder Mitchell Santner, Maxwell immediately spun around and shrugged his shoulders at attendees on the hill.

A few young cricket fans responded by showing the Aussie their middle finger.

Maxwell is renowned as one of the most destructive batsmen in short-format cricket, but has struggled to unearth runs across the Tasman this week.

The 32-year-old has registered scores of 1 and 3 against the Black Caps, who have raced to a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Last week, Maxwell was picked up by the Royal Challengers in the IPL auction for a mind-boggling AU$2.5 million sum.

Australian batsman David Warner couldn’t resist the opportunity to poke fun at his teammate while commentating for Fox Cricket on Monday.

“Not a bad result in the IPL auction for the ‘Big Show’ either,” Warner said on Fox Cricket’s coverage.

Australian great Mark Waugh replied: “Considering his last IPL season.”

Warner joked: “It’s surprising, you get let go from your franchise and you get a lot more after being released.”

Maxwell currently sits at No. 5 on the ICC T20 batting rankings, and featured in the Big Bash League’s official Team of the Tournament.

Australia fell agonisingly short of securing an unlikely victory on Thursday, losing the thrilling contest by four runs.

All-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Daniel Sams combined for a record-breaking partnership of 92 to put the visitors within touching distance of the 220-run target.

But needing 15 runs from the final over, the Blacks Caps held their nerve to deny an Australian comeback coming to fruition.

The third T20 between New Zealand and Australia will take place in Wellington on Wednesday.
