Marcus Stoinis erupts and belts Victoria all over the park for WA

After enduring a nightmare World Cup campaign, one Aussie star bounced back with an out of this world showing with the willow.

Marcus Stoinis was at his absolute best with the bat on Saturday.

Marcus Stoinis has made an early statement of intent with his six-laden unbeaten century highlighting a hefty one-day cup win for Western Australia over Victoria in the domestic cricket season opener in Perth.

Victoria were rolled for 261 on Saturday off 39.2 overs as the Warriors collected a 125-run win over the cup holders at the WACA.

Stoinis cast aside a modest World Cup campaign in England with an extraordinary display of hitting that yielded seven sixes, including four off a 28-run Scott Boland over.

Despite arriving at the crease in the 33rd over, Stoinis turned on the afterburners to reach his ton with a six off the last ball of the innings to reach 101 off just 58 balls and take WA to 8-386.

In reply, Victoria went hard from the outset, with Aaron Finch taking 17 off the opening over, before the Australian one-day captain went for 33 off 16 balls.

The Vics remained in the contest as Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson put on a hard-hitting 94 off 10.3 overs for the fifth wicket.

But Maxwell fell for 51 off 35 balls, and Maddinson’s dismissal for 87 off 80 signalled the beginning of the end for the Bushrangers.

The run-scoring tone was set from the start as WA opener Josh Philippe cracked a four from the first ball of the summer.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was eventually dismissed for 61 from 43 balls, while captain Ashton Turner also found his rhythm with 52 off 49.

There was joy for Ashes flop Cameron Bancroft, who posted a confident 78 from 75 deliveries, before being caught on the boundary seeking a third six.

Victoria rested Ashes representatives Marcus Harris, Peter Siddle and James Pattinson, with the trio in contention for next weekend’s matches.
