REPLAY: Re-live the action from day three of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Hobart

RE-LIVE all the action from day three of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Hobart.

RE-LIVE all the action from day three of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Hobart.

6.30pm AEDT - AUS 0/27 at stumps

That's it for day three, with Australia holding a 141-run lead.

Ed Cowan will resume on 16 tomorrow, with Dave Warner on eight.

Great fightback from the Sri Lankans today, with Tillakaratne Dilshan (147) and Angelo Mathews (75) lifting the visitors from the awful position of 4/87.

Peter Siddle owned the session after tea, finishing with figures of 5-54 as the Sri Lankans were eventually all out for 336.

See you tomorrow to do it all again.

6.10pm AEDT - AUS 0/20

Warner edged one that evaded the slip cordon, but other than that the Australians have played some very good bowling well.

Edging towards stumps now.

5.57pm AEDT - AUS 0/13

Aussies being very watchful, as they need to be.

Cowan's dominated the strike, moving to 10 off 30.

Warner is on one off just eight.

5.45pm AEDT - AUS 0/6

Wow, cracking over from Nuwan Kulasekara to Ed Cowan.

First he strikes him in the chest with a ball that jumps off a length and nips back, while Cowan tries to play a forward defensive stroke. It hurt.

He also beats Cowan's outside edge with one that stays low.

The deck is doing plenty and the Aussies will do well to keep all their wickets intact before stumps.

5.40pm AEDT - AUS 0/0

Players on their way back out. Sun shower at best, that was.

5.30pm AEDT - AUS 0/0

Rain is coming down again and the players are off, covers are coming on.

Not necessarily the end of the day's play, though.

5.21pm AEDT - AUS 0/0

Dave Warner and Ed Cowan on their way out to the middle.

Another hour of play left tonight - up to 16 overs.

Tricky period for the openers, especially with a bit of rain about.

5.07pm AEDT - SL all out for 336

WICKET!

Peter Siddle picks up the last wicket, finishing with 5/54 off 25 overs - his fifth Test five-for in Australia.

Welegedara is out for zilch, caught by Hussey at point.

Great effort from Siddle, once again having to increase his workload because Australia lost a bowler - Ben Hilfenhaus - earlier in the day to injury.

Australia take a 114-run lead into their second innings, which will begin shortly.

5.01pm AEDT - SL 9/336

WICKET!

Nathan Lyon gets his man in the end.

After Matty Wade missed a stumping chance off Lyon's bowling that should have marked the end of Nuwan Kulasekara for three, the spinner eventually picked him up for 23 - caught at deep square by a chap named Silk, the substitute fielder.

4.53pm AEDT - SL 8/320

WICKET!

Siddle has four scalps now but he can consider himself very lucky on this occasion.

Rangana Herath is given out lbw for a duck but replays show he got a HUGE inside edge.

Herath knew he hit it but couldn't review because Sri Lanka had already used up their two reviews.

Shocker. But Australia will take it.

4.45pm AEDT - SL 7/316

WICKET!

Siddle strikes again. Prasanna Jayawardene is gone, lbw for 40 after a review.

The umpire originally gave it not out - thinking it hit the bat first.

The Aussies weren't convinced but decided to look upstairs anyway and it paid it off - replays showed this one hit pad first, was in line and hitting middle three-quarters of the way up.

4.40pm AEDT - SL 6/316

Huge six from Kulasekara off the bowling of Lyon - slightly straighter than cow corner.

Let's see how much he makes Wade pay for that missed stumping chance.

Jayawardene is up to 40 off just 52 balls.

4.27pm AEDT - SL 6/304

MISSED STUMPING!

Matty Wade, who has already come under scrutiny this summer for his glovework, has missed another sitter of a stumping chance.

Kulasekara charged Lyon and missed, and the ball came through at waste height for Wade. But he dropped it cold.

Ian Healy's putting it down to a lack of concentration, rather than a lack of confidence.

4.25pm AEDT - SL 6/304

Gotta say, it was much easier for me when Mathews and Dilshan were at the crease, compared with Jayawardene and Kulasekara, when it comes to spelling.

They've moved to 37 and three respectively.

Meanwhile, the Bowlologist liked Starc's wicket ball.

4.11pm AEDT - SL 6/289

WICKET!

The blogger's curse?

Just as I was saying Australia aren't taking any wickets and blah, blah, blah, Mitchel Starc goes on bowls Tillakaratne Dilshan for 147.

The big left-armer, coming around the wicket, fired in a big yorker from the wide angle and Dilshan couldn't do much about it.

A fantastic innings comes to an end.

Australia's into the tail now, as Nuwan Kulasekara comes to the middle.

Jayawardene's moved quickly to 25.

4.04pm AEDT - SL 5/280

There's a debate happening among our readers in Perth about whether or not Mitchell Johnson should have been selected for this Test.

It's a tricky subject to bring up now, given Hilfenhaus has broken down and the Australians couldn't have predicted that.

But Johnson is a wicket-taker. And at the moment, Australia's not taking wickets.

What do you reckon? Should Mitch be out there?

3.50pm AEDT - SL - 5/269

Dilshan follows Jayawardene's lead in the second over after tea, taking Starc for 10 runs, including two fours through cover.

Where has this come from?

3.45pm AEDT - SL 5/259

Well, Jayawardene is off the mark - and in a big way.

The keeper took 10 runs off Watson's first over after lunch, with an elegant four off his pads and another not so elegant one over slips.

3.20pm AEDT - SL 5/249

That's tea and the Australians go in reinvigorated after breaking through the stubborn 161-run partnership between Tillakaratne Dilshan and Angelo Mathews.

Peter Siddle got the break through, trapping Mathews in front for 75.

Dilshan is still there on 132 with Prasanna Jayawardene, who is yet to score and got a pair in his last Test in Hobart.

Here's Mathews' dismissal and you can see more in our interactive scoreboard.

3.08pm AEDT - SL 5/248

Keeper-batsman Prasanna Jayawardene is the new man at the crease, but he's yet to get off the mark.

Dilshan is 131 not out.

3.01pm AEDT - SL 5/248

WICKET!

Huge. Peter Siddle breaks through for Australia after a huge struggle today for the hosts.

Angelo Mathews is the man to go for 75 off 186 balls, out lbw.

Mathews asked for a review, hoping height may save him. But the ball hit him on the back leg and HawkEye said it was clipping the top of middle.

The ball nipped back a long way.

Great effort from Mathews. His 161-run parternship with Dilshan changed the game for Sri Lanka. The pair were out there for almost 57 overs - that's a long time without a wicket.

Siddle
Siddle

2.43pm AEDT - SL 4/237

Shane Watson off the ground now, but just for a toilet break it looks like.

But the substitute fielder who has come on to replace him is fielding at point!

Imagine if he drops a catch or misses a runout. It's such a crucial position.

Why would you take the risk? And why is Warner at cover and not fielding there?

So many questions...

2.37pm AEDT - SL 4/237

Mmm, Mathews not too bothered by the new ball - at least when Starc puts it on his pads - clipping it through midwicket for four, along the ground all the way.

He's up to 70 now and may finally be getting over his run-scoring struggles that have hampered him since lunch.

Dilshan is 125 not out.

No wicket all day for the Aussies. And Hilfenhaus is out of action with a side strain, if you're just joining us.

2.33pm AEDT - SL 4/233

Alright, here we go. New ball taken and it's in Mitchell Starc's hands.

2.15pm AEDT - SL 4/218

Shane Watson into the attack now. Pressure keeps building. Something's gotta give.

Let's see if Jacques Kallis' tips for Watto can help him get a breakthrough here.

Maiden from Watson. Surprise, surprise.

2.10pm AEDT - SL 4/217

Drinks.

Slow going at the moment - Siddle's bowled four maidens on the trot.

Just been going through Dilshan's stats.

This is his second ton against Australia and first Down Under.

His average against Australia is a pretty ordinary 29.36 in Sri Lanka, but this knock has brought his average up to a tick under 70 here.

Fifteen career Test hundreds now, including three in his past four Tests.

1.51pm AEDT - SL 4/215

These Sri Lankans need to get their heads right.

Dave Warner has another runout chance after Dilshan pushes to gully and the pair start a run, but Mathews is sent back.

Warner throws to the non-striker's end but misses again. Mathews would have been goooone.

1.38pm AEDT - SL 4/208

Oooh. Nathan Lyon turns one big time out of the rough outside off, narrowly missing Dilshan's inside edge on the forward defence.

Promising signs for the Aussie spinner.

1.34pm AEDT - SL 4/207

Dave Warner has a runout chance at gully but, with about one and a half stumps to aim at, can't hit the target.

More uncertain running between the wickets from the Sri Lankan pair.

1.31pm AEDT - SL 4/204

FIFTY!

Mathews finally breaks the shackles but it isn't convincing.

He charges Lyon and forces is it uppishly through mid wicket to the fence for four.

A single two balls later brings up his half ton off 127 balls.

Partnership with Dilshan up to 117 runs.

Sri Lankans fighting back hard.

Mathews
Mathews

1.27pm AEDT - SL 4/196

Angelo Mathews (45) hasn't scored a run since lunch. Nine runs in eight overs since the break for the pair.

1.20pm AEDT - SL 4/194

Dilshan unleashes a cover drive off Starc for four, easing the tension somewhat.

Still, the Sri Lankan has looked edgy ever since he got into the 90s, and bringing up the ton surprisingly hasn't changed much.

Aussies must sense a wicket here.

1.15pm AEDT - SL 4/189

Three maidens in a row. Two from Lyon and one from Starc.

Half shout from Lyon to Mathews for lbw turned down as well.

Sustained pressure.

1.06pm AEDT - SL 4/189

The Aussies almost have their man. Dilshan edges a full Mitchell Starc delivery, but it doesn't carry to Watson at slip.

For the second time today, Bill Lawry yells, "Gone!" to no avail.

LUNCH

12.19pm AEDT - SL 4/187

Change of plans. The umpires have decided to take an early lunch while the groundstaff take the time to remove the covers and get any excess water off the ground.

Logical. I like it.

12.11pm AEDT

Rain's stopped and the umpires are coming back out. Looks we'll be back in action very shortly.

12pm AEDT - SL 4/187

Uh oh. It's raining. The players are off and the covers are on.

We'll keep you updated about how long this is going to take.

Dilshan will be relieved to have brought up his ton before the delay - he was struggling.

He's on 103, with Mathews on 45. Their partnership is 100 runs on the dot so far.

11.55am AEDT - SL 4/187

CENTURY!

Finally, Dilshan gets there after a good half-hour in the 90s.

He guides a Siddle delivery behind point for four to bring up his ton off 148 balls.

Dilshan lets out a scream, raises both hands in the air, jumps, fist pumps... the whole bit.

Still has plenty of work to do, though.

Dilshan
Dilshan

11.42am AEDT - SL 4/182

Dilshan, now 98, has a bad case of the nervous 90s. Can't seem to get that ton.

Just pushed a dangerous single to mid off.

Would love to see a stat on how many players have been run out in the 90s over the years.

Hussey came close yesterday as well, of course.

Dilshan
Dilshan

11.30am AEDT - SL 4/179

All of a sudden, with Australia a bowler down and Dilshan (96) and Mathews (44) in command, Michael Clarke's early declaration is starting to look far less brilliant than it was last night, when the Aussies ripped through the top order to have them in big trouble at 4/87.

Pup has brought himself into the attack, but Mathews hit him for two fours down the ground in the one over. With the first, there were cries for, "Catch!" but mid on couldn't get a hand to it.

The second was absolutely creamed.

Dilshan just slashed over slips off Starc to move within four of a great ton.

11.16am AEDT

More on Hilfy. Looks like he won't be back in this Test for a while...

11.10am AEDT - SL 4/155

Sri Lankas moving along really nicely this morning. Dilshan up to 81 and Mathews 35.

Lyon and Watson have both come under a bit of punishment.

It appears there was a plan to take on Lyon from the get-go.

10.50am AEDT - SL 4/126

There's a suggestion Hilfy has picked up a side strain...

10.42am AEDT - SL 4/122

Ordinary first over from Mitchell Starc after replacing Siddle in the attack.

He goes for eight after Dilshan hammers him - first through point, and then through cover - for two boundaries.

With Hilfy potentially out of the attack for a little while, Starc needs to find his range.

Hilfenhaus
Hilfenhaus

10.34pm AEDT - SL 4/114

Bit of a worry for Australia as Ben Hilfenhaus leaves the ground at Bellerive with an apparent injury.

Good news is he did jog off the ground, so it doesn't appear serious.

Shane Watson replaces the local hero in the attack.

Solid start from the tourists. Mathews has quickly moved to 20.

10.23am AEDT - 4/104

Classic moment from Bill Lawry in the commentary box. He yells, "GONE!" but it's nowhere near gone.

Dilshan safely played Siddle to the turf off a ball that reared up, but the great Victorian obviously saw something different.

His fellow commentators get stuck in.

10.11am AEDT- SL 4/91

Two quality batsmen at the crease for Sri Lanka in Tillakaratne Dilshan (52) and Angelo Mathews (4).

Aussies still have plenty of work to do. But the Sri Lankans clearly have more. Big session for the visitors.

9.55am AEDT

Good morning and welcome to day three of the first Test between Australian and Sri Lanka in Hobart, where the hosts will be looking to go on with the job and pick up their first win of the summer.

Skipper Michael Clarke declared Australia's innings closed earlier than most people would have predicted at 5/450 yesterday, following a fine 115 not out from Mike Hussey.

By stumps, the Sri Lankans were reeling at 4/87.

Play begins at 10am to make up for the rain delays we've had.
