RE-LIVE the action from the final day of the first Test against Sri Lanka, as Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc lead Australia to victory.

RE-LIVE the action from the final day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Hobart, as Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc lead Australia to victory.

6.10pm AEDT

Well, that was fun.

Great finish from Mitchell Starc, who rolled through the tail and ended up with 5/63.

But the undoubted hero for Australia was Peter Siddle, who took 4/50 in the second dig to go with 5/54 in the first, narrowly missing his first 10-wicket Test.

Lots to look forward to moving ahead to Boxing Day. Will Michael Clarke play? Who might replace him? Who'll come in for Hilfy.

And what about all this ball-tampering stuff?

Australia won't be too worried about that just yet, though.

This first win of the summer had been a long time coming. They'll want to enjoy it.

6.04pm AEDT - SL ALL OUT FOR 255

AUSTRALIA WIN!

Starc gets the last wicket, and five for the innings, to earn Australia victory at Bellerive.

The big left-armer dug it in short and Eranga feathered it through to Wade.

5.57pm AEDT - SL 9/250

Starc steaming in with five slips. Love it. Racing Siddle for the Michelle.

5.54pm AEDT - SL 9/250

Mitchell Starc deservedly gets Herath with another beautiful yorker.

Herath did his best, getting bat on it into the pad, but it deflected back onto the stumps.

That's four for Starc now.

5.47pm AEDT - SL 8/250

OK, that was unbelievable that Starc's ball did not send the stumps flying.

He bowls a beauty of an inswinging yorker to the left-handed Herath and he can't do anything about it, but the ball somehow misses leg stump.

It's actually the second time that's happened to Starc this afternoon, but this one was extreme.

5.35pm AEDT - SL 8/247

WICKET!

Mitchell Starc bowls a peach and Kulasekara does well just to edge it through to Matty Wade.

Bowling across the right-hander, the ball had swing, it seamed, it was a great length.

Too good.

Two wickets to go.

5.25pm AEDT

In case you missed it earlier, here's Matty Wade's first over in Test cricket... Gold.

5.20pm AEDT - SL 7/239

Herath just hanging on after a couple of close lbw shouts.

He won't last long, surely.

Playing all sorts of stupid shots in the circumstances.

Twenty overs left, minimum.

5.10pm AEDT - SL 7/235

WICKET!

And it's not Siddle this time.

Mitchell Starc gets Prasanna Jayawardene with a beast of a delivery that jumped up and catches him on the gloves and floats to Mike Hussey at second slip.

Australia closing in.

4.59pm AEDT - SL 6/227

Lots of oohs and aahs and cries to the heavens, but no more wickets for Australia.

Those balls that we saw spray all over the place off the pitch last night have started doing the same again, though, and Kulasekara was hit in the ribs with a ball that came back a mile off the pitch from Siddle.

4.53pm AEDT - SL 6/226

Prasanna Jayawardene to 15 and playing a few shots.

Nuwan Kulasekara on two.

Exciting end to this Test, but looking ahead to Boxing Day - and considering the injury problems Australia have, who would you pick in the team? Play selector here

4.39pm AEDT - SL 6/218

WICKET!

Yep, Siddle again. And another huge won. Thilan Samaraweera goes for 49 from 140 balls.

The ball stays low and traps the Sri Lankan on his crease and it is plumb in front.

Into the tail now. Siddle has taken 4/42 to go with his 5/54 in the first innings.

4.29pm AEDT - SL 5/209

It's amazing what a wicket can do. Now all of a sudden the ball is singing as it leaves Siddle's hand.

The Australians are up and know victory is within reach.

Still some 30 overs to play. One more wicket and they're into the tail.

If only Siddle could get a bit of help...

4.17pm AEDT - SL 5/201

WICKET!

Now Australia is in with a huge chance of getting the job done.

Siddle is the man again, getting Mathews to play at a length ball he could easily have left alone.

Mathews gets a good edge and the Matty Wade takes an easy catch behind the stumps.

He departs for 19 off 61 balls.

4.04pm AEDT - SL 4/187

Back after tea and we're starting to see a lot more short stuff - but good short stuff, up around the ribs.

Unfortunately, Matty Wade has the gloves back on. He was looking good with the ball.

3.42pm AEDT - SL 4/186 AT TEA

That's tea and Sri Lanka are looking a very good shot for the draw now.

Australia need something special from their bowlers.

Samaraweera is 38 off 112 and Mathews 11 off 53.

3.40pm AEDT - SL 4/186

MATTY WADE INTO THE ATTACK!

Definition of "desperation": Michael Clarke calling on the wicketkeeper to bowl.

To be fair, the little fella looks pretty threatening with his medium pace.

Wade got a couple to stay low and then gets one 123.8km/h thunderbolt to lift and hit Mathews on the gloves.

Phil Hughes has not stopped laughing since being asked to take over behind the stumps.

3.34pm AEDT - SL 4/181

Starc follows up with a bouncer, of course - and Mathews goes after it but misses.

Good to see a bit of fire. It has been lacking from the Aussie attack today.

3.33pm AEDT

After receiving extensive on-field treatment, Mathews is going to bat on.

3.27pm AEDT - SL 4/181

Ouch. Starc catches Mathews right on the point of the elbow with a short one and he needs attention.

3.10pm AEDT - SL 4/176

It's not a coincidence that Australia can't bowl out a side twice, when you look at the numbers.

Granted, there have been a lot of injuries - but the selectors aren't picking guys who take hauls.

Out of the entire Australian attack - including Hilfenhaus - Siddle is the only bowler with more than three five-wicket hauls in Tests.

Herath has taken seven this year alone.

2.55pm AEDT

Covers are off. Play to resume in a few minutes.

Still about half a day's play left. Can Australia take the six wickets and finally get a win?

2.49pm AEDT

Sun is shining at Bellerive and there is no rain, but the covers are on because another shower appears to be close.

Conservative, but I guess it makes sense.

2.37pm AEDT - SL 4/169

Ah, rain is falling again. It's not looking good for Australia, although two more wickets and they're into the tail.

Samaraweera has dug in for 32 off 79 balls. Mathews is with him on one off 28.

Australia's inability to take 20 wickets in a Test again an issue.

Hopefully, the rain won't last too long.

Dark skies

2.29pm AEDT - SL 4/168

Good news is Watto's body seems to be holding together well. He's bowled 39.4 overs so far in this match, which is already more than he's ever bowled before in a Test.

He bowled 20.4 in the first dig and is up to 19 in this one.

2.16pm AEDT - SL 4/161

Few more balls staying low but other than that, the Sri Lankans looking solid.

Meanwhile, there's an update in the Siddle yarn. Click here for more.

2.02pm AEDT - SL 4/155

And we're back.

Samaraweera (23) has been joined at the crease by Angelo Mathews, who the Aussies found particularly difficult to remove in the first innings.

1.52pm AEDT

Covers are coming off. Play should resume shortly.

1.43pm AEDT

So Siddle has seven wickets for the match now and he's yet to have a 10-wicket Test in his career.

What if his first one came in the same Test he was accused of ball-tampering in...

Still raining, by the way.

1.35pm AEDT  - SL 4/151

More rain, although it's very light at the moment.

The covers are on but the players are hanging around.

Doesn't look like this will be too long a delay.

1.32pm AEDT - SL 4/151

WICKET!

Siddle strikes again and it's a big one - Sangakkara goes lbw for 63.

The ball stayed low off a shortish length and trapped Sangakkara on his crease.

The Sri Lankan reviewed, hoping it may have pitched outside leg, but not this time.

He's gone.

Huge moment for Australia.

1.20pm AEDT  - SL 3/150

Once again the umpire is wrong - they're not having a good Test.

Samaraweera is given out lbw to Siddle, but refers and the replay shows he was hit outside the line.

Starting to get the feeling Sri Lanka can hold on here, which was inconceivable going into today.

It could be Adelaide all over again.

1.06pm AEDT

And we're about to get back underway at Bellerive.

What do you reckon? Will Australia get the job done?

Who will stand up?

What do you make of the Peter Siddle ball-tampering allegations?

12.30pm AEDT - SL 3/144 AT LUNCH

That's lunch and the Sri Lankans are holding firm, with Kumar Sangakkara on 58 off 206 balls and Thilan Samaraweera 17 off 41.

Australia's only joy of the morning was the wicket of Mahela Jayawardene, caught by Michael Clarke at slip off Peter Siddle for 19.

A lot of work to do for the Aussies if they are going to pick up their first win of the summer.

12.22pm AEDT - SL 3/140

Breaking news drama from Bellerive, with Peter Siddle accused of ball-tampering...

Siddle in ball-tampering claim

12.18pm AEDT - SL 3/135

Well, the Aussies thought they'd broken through the brick wall - and so did the umpire.

Sangakkara was given out lbw off the Watson's bowling, but the Sri Lankan reviewed.

The replay showed the ball was hitting Sangakkara outside the line and the decision was reversed.

Watson was coming around the wicket and wide on the crease. It was a short ball that stayed low and Sangakkara went for the pull but it struck him around the knee roll.

Close call.

12.14pm AEDT - SL 3/135

I wonder how many times Michael Clarke has re-lived his dropped catch of Sangakkara since yesterday?

He's a brick wall.

12pm AEDT - SL 3/127

New man Samaraweera decides to take Lyon on and he wins, this time.

He charges the spinner and smashes his him high and long toward the long-on boundary for four.

Lyon won't mind seeing that, though.

Samaraweera's on eight, Sangakkara still 50.

11.48am AEDT - SL 3/121

FIFTY!

Great knock in trying circumstances so far from Kumar Sangakkara, bringing up his 50 by smacking a Warner full toss to the the mid-wicket fence.

He's faced 170 balls now but will need to face many more if Sri Lanka are going to earn a draw.

11.39am AEDT - SL 3/113

Siddle replaced by Starc, even after breaking through.

Dave Warner's been looking handy at the other end, although his figures of 0/4 off three are flattering.

He's offered up a full toss and some long hops, but the Sri Lankans have been happy to work them for ones.

His good balls are genuinely good though.

11.30am AEDT - SL 3/112

WICKET!

Peter Siddle is the man to break through for Australia, capturing Mahela Jayawardene caught at first slip by Michael Clarke for 19.

It's a great catch from Clarke, especially with him carrying a hamstring injury.

He caught it at shoelace height, down to his right.

Siddle
Siddle

10.45am AEDT - SL 2/87

No real signs of uneven bounce today. But then, the Australians haven't really been putting it in the right areas.

They cannot rely on this deck to take the wickets for them.

Sangakkara up to 36 and Jayawardene eight.

10.34am AEDT - SL 2/81

First boundary of the morning as Sangakkara rocks backs and hammers a short Lyon delivery through point.

10.26am AEDT - SL 2/73

Sri Lankans playing a few shots, surprisingly.

There are a minimum 91 overs remaining, so If the visitors were to go for the win from here they would require a further 320 runs at 3.5 an over. Just putting it out there...

Sangakkara
Sangakkara

10.13am AEDT - SL 2/65

First over of the day bowled by Mitchell Starc to Mahela Jayawardene.

It's a maiden, and we'll see plenty of them today.

The target for Sri Lanka is 393, but that's irrelevant.

Survival is their only concern.

Nathan Lyon coming on at the other end.

9.50am AEDT

Looking forward to a good battle today as the Sri Lankans try to survive on a deck that is doing plenty in Hobart.

The tourists resume at 2/65 with main men Kumar Sangakkara (18) and Mahela Jayawardene (5) the not out batsmen overnight.

Australia will be desperate to break through for their first win of the summer but it will not be easy as they are without Ben Hilfenhaus, who broke down with a side strain, while captain Michael Clarke will not be able to bowl either after picking up a strained hamstring.

Play starts at 10.10am AEDT.
