Jake Fraser-McGurk shatters records with ridiculous 29-ball hundred against Tasmania

Young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk has made the cricket world stand up and take notice with a faintly ridiculous innings that you need to see to believe.

'Berserk' McGurk hits RECORD 29-ball ton!

Remember the name Jake Fraser-McGurk.

The 21-year-old, last season spurned by Victoria, has just cracked the fastest ever List A century, setting a new world record with his 29-ball effort against Tasmania at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide.

In an extraordinary display of hitting, Fraser-McGurk continued on before he was dismissed for 125 off 38 deliveries, including 10 fours and 13 sixes, as the Redbacks tried to chase down Tasmania’s immense total of 435, itself the highest ever total in Australian domestic one-day cricket.

He needed only 18 balls to reach his half century, the fastest in the history of Australian domestic one-day cricket.

With the boundaries at Karen Rolton Oval measuring a mere 64m square alongside a new drop-in wicket grown alongside the wickets used for the Adelaide Oval, the conditions were a perfect storm for the free-swinging youngster, but may be a sign of things to come in the one-day game.

The cricket world was in awe of McGurk’s efforts, which beat AB de Villiers’ previous record of 31 balls against the West Indies in 2014-15.

Broadcaster Adam White couldn’t quite believe what he’d seen.

“I’m still getting my head around what I’ve just seen,” White said.

News Corp’s Daniel Cherny said it might cause Victoria regret their decision to let one of their most prized prospects go.

“It’s one innings, but do tend to think Victoria will live to rue the call to let Jake Fraser-McGurk depart,” Cherny mused.

South Australian cricket journalist Bharat Sundaresan said: “Nothing quite like some early season demolition derby #MarshCup batting at the Karen Rolton Oval.”

Fraser-McGurk has always shown his swashbuckling premise, bursting onto the scene at under-17 level as Victoria’s preferred top-order opener to Ashley Chandrasinghe, but wasn’t able to put together consistent performances in recent years, seeing him look to greener pastures in South Australia for the 2022/23 season.

He was part of the 2020 Under-19 World Cup squad that included the likes of Todd Murphy and Tanveer Sangha, but was sent home early after being scratched on the face by a monkey during a team outing to a nature reserve.

The shift away has brought with it glimmers of promise, including starts of 37 and 29 in the second Shield match of the summer, but this innings is timely ahead of a Big Bash League season in which Fraser-McGurk’s Renegades have added significantly to their batting stocks.

Fraser-McGurk’s power has been on display in various forms, with the youngster running a cult TikTok account dedicated to his golf swing.
