ICC match referee Chris Broad mocks David Warner in deleted tweet

The ICC has been forced to take action after Stuart Broad’s father was forced to delete a tweet mocking David Warner.

Broad dismisses Warner for 17th time!

ICC match referee Chris Broad, the father of England bowler Stuart, has joined the David Warner pile-on, mocking the Australian opener after his dismissal on day two of the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

The veteran seamer dismissed Warner for a 17th time in Tests on Friday, removing the left-hander for 1 after an outside edge carried to Zak Crawley at second slip.

Following the wicket, Broad’s father tweeted a meme that poked fun at Warner — in the photoshopped image, the 36-year-old writes “Stuart Broad has got me out again” on a chalkboard, recreating the famous opening sequence from The Simpsons.

It’s understood the ICC is dealing with the matter internally, and the tweet has since been deleted.

The 65-year-old, who represented England in 25 Tests and 34 ODIs, commenced his role as an ICC match referee in 2003, officiating several Australian matches since. However, he is not involved in the current Ashes series.

Since the start of the 2019 Ashes, Warner has averaged 8.33 against Broad in Tests with a strike rate of 36.2. Only one Australian in Test history has been dismissed more often by a single bowler — Arthur Morris against England seamer Alec Bedser.

Warner has been dismissed by right-armed seamers coming from around the wicket in 16 consecutive Ashes innings in England, averaging 14.75 during that period.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the New South Welshman has averaged 28.17 in Tests with one century in 40 knocks. He hasn’t scored a Test century outside Australia in nearly six years.

“When you have an opening bowler bowling to an opening batsman, they are more likely to get them out with a new ball at times,” Australian coach Andrew McDonald told reporters on Friday evening.

“I think the three 50-plus run opening partnerships that Usman (Khawaja) and Dave have put on in the series have been telling and have had great impact.”
