Dumped Aussie cricket coach Justin Langer has reportedly rejected rumours he has been approached with an offer to lead the Liberal Party of Western Australia.

The 51-year-old in February famously resigned as the Australian men’s team coach after rejecting a token six-month contract extension following a mutiny from his players.

Langer said recently he has turned his attention to writing his memoirs and is yet to announce his next project following his departure from Cricket Australia.

He has been linked to the vacant head coach position at the Hobart Hurricanes Big Bash franchise and was reported to be in the running to take up the position of England’s test match head coach.

However, a new offer from the WA Liberals gives him a very different path to choose.

The Sunday Times first reported there was a secret plan from party members to have Langer lead the party at the 2025 State election after it was decimated at the 2021 Western Australian state election.

According to the report, there have been several approaches from the party in a bid to recruit Langer, a popular Western Australia figure.

The plan would see Langer likely parachuted into the seat of Cottesloe, should leader Dr David Honey retire before the next election.

Liberal minister of parliament Libby Mettam has publicly supported the concept of Langer being recruited by the state branch.

However, the offer has been shut down before it could even get off the ground with Langer telling journalists he is yet to be approached by the party.

Seven News reports Langer “has no idea” where the “bombshell” story has come from and said Langer claims the party is yet to approach him.

Langer is also reported to have recently been scouted as a candidate to join the Western Australian Cricket Board as a director following two recent resignations.

Meanwhile, Langer said earlier this month he was open to taking up employment away from cricket as he looks to the future.

“I just wonder now whether it’s time for a new chapter and doing something else because I love the game of cricket but I’ve been doing it (for a long time),” he said.

“I’m really excited for the future. I’ve got some scars from the last 12 months but I’ll work through those. That’s life. In my darkest hours, I’ve learned my greatest lessons.”
