David Warner’s place in the Australian Test squad must come to an end

Things have gone from bad to worse for Australian opener David Warner with fans now calling for the selectors to drop him for good.

David Warner’s place in the Australian Test squad has been up for discussion for a long time now. It’s time that discussion came to an end.

The Aussie opener has delighted fans for a very long time with his flashy batting displays, but those days are a long way behind him.

Through three Tests this series Warner has struggled to have any meaningful impact outside of the opening innings at Lord’s.

He has returns of 9, 36, 66, 25, 4 and 1.

In 12 innings throughout 2023 he has only managed to surpass the half-century mark once while scoring single-figures five times.

Warner announced his retirement plan from Test cricket in a bold move to try and lock away his place in the squad.

But his remarks, when stating he would retire after a farewell tour at the end of next summer on home soil came, came with one five-word caveat.

“You‘ve got to score runs”.

While Warner has done wonderful things for Australian cricket, he’s not doing what he’s in the team to do which, as he said, is score runs. The selectors must act and cannot afford to fall into the sentimental trap.

The calls for Warner to be let go from the line-up came in thick and fast following his latest failure.

Things have gotten so bad for the Aussie opener that even his opponent’s dad is joining in the pile-on to his lacklustre run.

Chris Broad, an ICC match referee and former England cricketer, mocked Warner after his son, Stuart, claimed the Aussie opener’s wicket for the 17th time in Tests.

Stuart Broad is only two Warner wickets away from the all-time record, which is held by Glenn McGrath for his dominance of Mike Atherton.

Alec Bedser, who dismissed Arthur Morris 18 times, and Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh, who both removed Atherton 17 times, round out the top five.

After Warner was caught at second slip for one in Australia’s second innings, Chris Broad posted an edit of a popular Simpsons meme showing Warner writing lines on a blackboard saying: “Stuart Broad has got me out again.”

Former Aussie quick Damien Fleming believes Warner will play in the Fourth Test despite making just four and one in this match – and 141 runs at 23.5 in the series.

“It’s definitely posing some big questions for the Australian cricket team (but he scored) 66 and 25 at Lord’s,” Fleming said on SEN. “To me he’s always got a two-Test buffer. I’d be playing him in the next Test and if he fails again …”

The Barmy Army branded Warner’s latest failure against Broad as “beyond a joke”.

The fourth Test gets underway on July 19 at Old Trafford, if Australia manage to go up 3-0 in the series the decision to replace Warner becomes easier for the selectors.

Unfortunately the series result shouldn’t affect the outcome, the time has run out for the Australian opener.
