David Warner’s audacious plan to ditch brother’s wedding for Big Bash rubbished

Recently retired Test star David Warner has been slammed over a plan he’s put in place to make a Big Bash appearance on Friday.

When you’re David Warner, the SCG can be turned into your own personal helipad.

At least that’s the plan for the recently-retired Test superstar as he looks to make a Big Bash appearance on Friday night.

Warner, 37, will be at his brother’s wedding in the Hunter Valley on Friday but is planning an audacious bid to helicopter in to the city ahead of the Sydney Thunder vs Sydney Sixers clash.

The plan will see him race from the ceremony to Cessnock Airport before he takes a 45-minute helicopter flight and lands on the SCG turf at 5pm.

Initially Warner was planning on landing at the $874m Allianz Stadium, but Code Sports’ Lachlan McKirdy noted the SCG was the more likely possibility.

“The biggest issue around using the SCG was whether Warner would get there before the ground had been set up for the broadcast,” McKirdy wrote.

“It appears a pre-5pm arrival is likely which means landing on the ground would be possible.”

The plan to depart his own brother’s wedding for a Big Bash contest however didn’t sit well with social media users.

One user wrote: “The whole thing is just silly. Why would he miss half of his brothers wedding to play for a team that is basically out of finals contention and who don’t need him? He mustn’t like his brother very much.”

Another added: “Surely he could stay at his brothers wedding.”

A third wrote: “David Warner turning up to a BBL match in a helicopter … I am speechless. He would want to make runs with that sort of entrance.”

Light showers are forecast for Sydney on Friday which could throw a spanner in the works of Warner’s plans.

“I’ve got a couple of aircraft booked pending weather,” Warner said after the Test against Pakistan.

“I can’t remember how long the reception or the wedding party (goes for) … it’s a fine line.

“I think (the wedding venue is) about a 45-minute drive from Cessnock. It might be tight but I’m trying my best to try and make it work for that day.”

The Thunder are mathematically alive in the BBL finals race but would need to win all three of their remaining games and have other results go their way to qualify.

The Sixers are almost certain to qualify already but would officially clinch a finals place with a win.
