David Warner doesn’t want to give up on World Cup ambitions
David Warner may be preparing to bring down the curtain on his Test career, but that doesn’t mean he wants to stop playing for Australia anytime soon.
David Warner has signalled his intent to keep playing one-day cricket for Australia and possibly on to the next World Cup in the wake of the triumph in India.
In a pointed response to a social media post from leading cricket website Cricinfo that declared the 37-year-old’s World Cup career had ended with a “glorious record” of 1527 runs, the veteran opened replied with “who said I’m finished??”
Warner, who was Australia’s second-highest run-scorer in the World Cup in India, finishing with 494 runs, has withdrawn from the upcoming T20 series against India to return home and prepare for his final Test series, against Pakistan, with his last match set for the SCG in January.
But he has flagged his intent to play on to the T20 World Cup, being played in the West Indies and US, in 2024.
His post suggests Warner could also now have plans to play on to the next ODI World Cup in 2027, being played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Warner, who turned 37 in October, would be 41, making it unlikely he would still be part of Australia’s 50-over team.

Warner, who made just seven in the final against India, also said “see you in 2027” in an Instagram post after the victory in which he said a lot of thankyous.
“Firstly I want to say thank you to India for hosting an absolutely incredible World Cup. The effort put into these events are enormous. Thank you to all the people involved behind the scenes, ground staff, people in the dressing rooms, kitchen hands, chefs, hotel staff, security, police, event organisers, the list goes on but most importantly the fans,” he said.
“Road blocks airport chaos when we have to sneak through, your patience is much appreciated. Without you all we can not play the game we all love. I know the result didn’t go (your) way but what it was, was an amazing few weeks. Chuffed to walk away as winners and 6 times champions. Our whole team should be extremely proud.
“Thanks again everyone, see you in 2027.”
