Cricket world celebrates 20th anniversary of Shane Warne's 'Ball of the Century' to Mike Gatting

RELIVE IT NOW: IT became known as "The Ball of the Century", and 20 years on it's hard to argue with that title.

IT became known as "The Ball of the Century", and 20 years on it's hard to argue with that title.

Shane Warne's first ball in an Ashes series, which saw him completely befuddle Mike Gatting with a delivery that spun anywhere from six inches to two feet, depending on who you ask, is still the yardstick that all great deliveries are measured against.

The ball catapulted the then-23-year-old to international superstardom, and began more than a decade of complete psychological dominance by Warne over England's batsmen.

Reminiscing on that fateful day at Old Trafford, Gatting still sounds like he's trying to work out how he lost his off stump to a ball that bounced well outside leg.

"I had most of it covered and had ensured it would not get round the back of my legs and if it did anything else, I was in the right position to react, but it spun quickly as well as a long way," Gatting told the UK's Daily Mail.

"It was a leg break and I knew he had put a lot of revs on it and we knew the wicket might turn, but not that much!"

The look on Gatting's face after turning around to see his stumps disturbed was priceless.

Or, as his batting partner at the time, Graham Gooch put it: "He looked as though someone had just nicked his lunch!"
