A fresh stumping furore has rocked cricket with Indian keeper Ishan Kishan being slammed for attempting to stump West Indies batter Jason Holder under hugely controversial circumstances.

Kishan whipped the bails off as Holder raised his back leg after the umpire had already called over during the West Indies ugly capitulation in the First Test at Windsor Park.

The Test debutant gloveman broke out into a loud appeal towards the square leg umpire having been watching on closely and appeared to be waiting for Holder to lift his leg.

The umpires immediately rejected the appeal with the over being signalled well before the stumping was attempted.

The scene has poured more fuel on the burning Ashes debate surrounding the dismissal of Jonny Bairstow during Australia’s victory in the Second Test.

Aussie keeper Alex Carey’s stumping of Bairstow has been the talk of the cricketing world this month with the act leading to levels of hostility not seen in the Ashes rivalry for some time.

England captain Ben Stokes famously jostled to take the moral high ground by suggesting he would have withdrawn the appeal had the situation have been reversed between the countries.

There was never any doubt about validity of Carey’s dismissal under the laws of the game, but Pandora’s box was opened when it was suggested the wicket fell short of the “spirit of cricket”.

The same can’t be said for the Kishan dismissal, since the umpire had clearly called over.

It’s why fans on social media have been scathing of Kishan’s behaviour.

The one-sided nature of India’s dominant victory by an innings and 141 runs has lessened the amount of outcry across social media.

However, The Hindustan Times reports fans have been calling for Kishan to be suspended.

The fact that the saga ended with Holder ultimately being able to continue his innings — the opposite of Carey’s now famous dismissal — has not been lost on English fans.

The West Indies can take some solace in that the dismissal will in some ways overshadow the team’s abysmal performance.

Ravichandran Ashwin will be giving the home side nightmares after a seven-wicket second innings demolition job on Day 3 of the First Test.

It was India’s largest margin of victory in a Test match in the West Indies and maintains an unbeaten run spanning more than 21 years against these opponents going into the second and final Test starting next Thursday in Trinidad.

After Rohit Sharma declared the tourists’ first innings closed at 421 for five, 40 minutes into the afternoon session, first day destroyers Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja wasted little time in adding to that first innings success to skittle the Caribbean team for 130 in just over 50 overs.

Ashwin fittingly ended the match by trapping last man Jomel Warrican leg-before. His haul of 7-71 lifted his match figures to 12 -131 — his eighth match haul of 10 wickets or more in Tests — while the support of Jadeja kept relentless pressure on a home side technically and temperamentally incapable of coping with such quality spin bowling on a helpful pitch.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite admitted it was a tough loss to take.

“I didn’t think it spun a lot early on, we just let ourselves down with the bat,” said the opener, a comment which immediately raised a few eyebrows given how the pitch behaved virtually from the first session.

“Senior guys, starting with myself, have to lead the way. We have to use the bat more instead of our pads.”
