India was eventually bowled out for 244 just before the tea break, meaning the tourists trailed by 94 runs after the first innings.
Cummins finished with impressive figures of 4/29 off 21.4 overs.
However, the Indian squad were hampered by two injury scares, with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja taken for scans in the afternoon.
Australia's second innings started poorly, with opening batsmen David Warner and Will Pucovski both dismissed cheaply.
But Aussie golden boys Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith combined for an unbeaten 68-run partnership to guide the hosts to stumps.
Australia is 2/103 at stumps with a lead of 197 runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin has been introduced into the attack for the first time today, and immediately gets the breakthrough for India.
Australian opener David Warner attempted a wild sweep shot, but missed the straight delivery and was struck in the hip.
The on-field umpire eventually raised the finger for LBW, but Warner quickly called for the DRS review.
Unfortunately for him, the ball was flicking the top of the stumps on Hawkeye, and the on-field decision remained.
Steve Smith is the new batsman at the crease, and Australia is now 2/35.

Australian debutant Will Pucovski is making his way back to the pavilion, dismissed by Indian paceman Mohammed Siraj for 10.
Siraj got the ball to nip away from the right-hander, catching the outside edge of his bat.
Substitute wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha claimed a smart catch low to his right to complete the dismissal.
Australia is now 1/16, with Marnus Labuschagne the new batsman at the crease.

India has been dismissed for 244 at the SCG, conceding a 94-run deficit in the first innings.
Pat Cummins was pick of the bowlers for Australia, finishing with superb figures of 4/29 off 21.4 overs.
The Aussie paceman removed Mohammed Siraj for the final wicket of the innings, the Indian tailender knicking off to the wicketkeeper for six.
Meanwhile, substitute wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was spotted warming up during the innings break, suggesting Rishabh Pant is unable to don the gloves after his blow to the elbow.
Soon after, it was confirmed Pant had left the venue to get scans done.

India has been atrocious between the wickets, and the Australians have been clinical in the field.
Another batsman has been run out at the SCG, with Marnus Labuschagne removing Jasprit Bumrah with a classy direct hit.
Ravindra Jadeja flicked a delivery from Mitchell Starc through towards the vacant area at square leg, and Labuschagne gave chase.
With the helmet on, Labuschagne retrieved the ball and hit the stumps at the non-striker's end, finding Bumrah about a metre short of the crease.
This is the fourth time Australia has achieved three run outs in a Test innings, and the first time since 1991.
India is now 9/225, still trailing by 113 runs, with Jadeja 15 not out.
Since Rishabh Pant's dismissal, India has lost 5/21.

Mitchell Starc has claimed his first wicket of the innings, removing debutant Navdeep Saini for four.
The Australian left-armer persisted with the short ball, pushing Saini onto the back foot.
The tailender eventually popped up a catch to Matthew Wade, who was waiting at short cover under the lid.
India is now 8/215, still trailing by 123 runs in Sydney.
When Saini bowled a bumper spell to Starc yesterday, that was ALWAYS coming. 🤣

Ravichandran Ashwin has been run out in bizarre circumstance at the SCG.
After Ravindra Jadeja pushed a full delivery from Cameron Green through the covers, he called his teammate through for an easy single.
Ashwin was slow to get going, watching the ball and not backing up the striker.
Pat Cummins collected the ball from mid off and flung it towards Marnus Labuchagne at the striker's end.
Incredibly, Ashwin was run out a few centimetres short of his ground after a pitiful attempt at sliding his bat.
"Where was he running? He was so slow!" former Australian all-rounder Brendon Julian exclaimed on Fox Cricket.
Former Test batsman Mark Waugh agreed: "That was an easy single … it's a waste of a wicket.
"That's very poor cricket from Ashwin."
India is now 7/207, still trailing by 131 runs.

Cheteshwar Pujara threatened to spend all day in the middle, but his defiant innings has finally come to a close.
Australian paceman Pat Cummins generated some extra bounce off the pitch, and the ball flicked Pujara's gloves through to the wicketkeeper.
Tim Paine accepted the catch, and the Indian No. 3 made his way back the pavilion for a patient 50.
Cummins has now removed Pujara four times this summer, becoming the first bowler to do so in a Test series.
He now boasts the remarkable figures of 3/29 off 20 overs.
The tourists are now in dire straits at the SCG, trailing by 143 runs with only four wickets in hand.

Josh Hazlewood has unearthed the breakthrough, ending the 53-run stand between Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant.
The Aussie paceman tempted Pant will a full delivery outside the off stump, which Pant looked to smack through the covers.
But the Indian wicketkeeper only managed a thick outside edge which flew to David Warner at first slip.
Warner claimed a smart catch to his left, and Pant's innings ended on 36.
India is now 5/195, still trailing by 143 runs in Sydney.

It's been a marathon, but Cheteshwar Pujara has finally brought up his half-century at the SCG.
He needed 174 balls to reach the minor milestone, making it the slowest 50 of his Test career.
Although it has been slow going, he will no doubt be targeting an even longer stint in the middle.
Cheteshwar Pujara's slowest test half-century was a 173-ball effort against South Africa at Johannesburg in January 2018. #AUSvIND
