Australian cricket coach Justin Langer has revealed he originally wanted his Headingley meltdown cut from Cricket Australia’s Amazon Prime documentary series.

The exceedingly popular The Test series has shown a new side of the Aussie team and its resurgence since the Cape Town ball tampering scandal — but not all of it has sat well with the former Western Australia coach.

Langer’s ethos of demanding values and a new identity for the Aussie team has been well received by critics of the recently released documentary series, but there’s one thing he originally wanted to be cut completely.

The series captured the moment the 49-year-old lashed out and kicked over a bin inside the Aussie dressing rooms during the iconic Third Test at Headingley where Ben Stokes famously led England to a one-wicket victory for the ages.

The documentary shows Langer losing his cool when spinner Nathan Lyon fumbled a late chance to run-out Jack Leach and seal a nail-biting victory for Australia.

Langer’s kick sent drink bottles and rubbish flying across the dressing room floor.

He has now revealed to The Grade Cricketer Podcast he wanted the scene cut.

However, the documentary also shows Langer returning to the dressing room to pick up the rubbish he skittled across the floor, picking up each item by hand.

Langer told the podcast he was forced to backflip on his decision to cull the scene after being convinced his rubbish pick-up embodied all the character traits he is demanding from his own players.

“The funniest thing about that, I haven’t actually watched the documentary for about six or seven months, but if we wanted to have things taken out (we could) and I said one thing you’ve got to take out is when I kicked the bin,” Langer said.

“They said, ‘What are you talking about? You know what you did next’. I said, ‘What do you mean what I did next? Nathan Lyon bloody missed the ball, the easiest thing in the world, I kicked the bin, what do you mean what happened next? I’ll tell you what happened next, we bloody lost the Test, that’s what happened next!’.

“He goes, ‘Nah, nah mate, you picked up all the bottles, you guys talk about elite humility, it’s got to be in there’.”

Elite professionalism, elite honesty, elite learning, elite mateship and elite humility are the five things Langer demanded of his playing group when he replaced Darren Lehmann as coach.

Langer also had some uncomfortable moments watching the rest of the Amazon series, admitting his potty-mouth surprised even himself.

“We had to put a lot of faith into the crew, but the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said.

“We’re really proud of the way it’s come out.

“My brother said to me yesterday, ‘If one more person says to me how much does your brother swear in the doco’ and that’s the only thing that’s worried me.

“I did swear a bit I think, particularly in the first few months of the job. It was very confronting watching it at moments like that.”
