‘Cheat code’: WBBL star Issy Wong smashes six sixes in ‘extraordinary’ display

Cricket fans were treated to an incredible display of power hitting when Issy Wong went ballistic in the WBBL, hitting six after six.

The WBBL has been treated to an extraordinary display of power hitting from Sydney Thunder batter Issy Wong, who whacked six sixes in a blistering innings.

After the Adelaide Strikers batted first and posted a strong total of 176, the Thunder were lagging behind the required run rate at 3-90 in the 14th over.

Wong, who had shown flashes of brilliance in T20 tournament The Hundred in the UK earlier this year, was elevated up the order to No. 5 in a bid to chase down the Strikers’ target.

The decision proved a wise one, with the English import bludgeoning 43 runs off 17 balls at a ridiculously high strike rate of 252.94.

Wong wasted no time getting going, hitting three sixes in a row off the bowling of spinner Dane van Niekerk in a superb exhibition of clean striking.

She smashed two more sixes off Australian fast bowling spearhead Megan Schutt and then another off a loose full toss from leg spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington.

Wong played to her strengths, smashing all six sixes over the rope in the same area of the ground — deep mid wicket.

It was a record-breaking knock too, as she became the first player in the seventh edition of the WBBL to his three sixes off consecutive balls.

Viewers were stunned by Wong’s brilliant six hitting prowess.

“Hold on to your hats,” cricket journalist Melinda Farrell said in commentary on Fox Cricket.

“What a display from Issy Wong. Wow. All those sixes have gone in the same part of the ground every single time. That’s incredible.

“She’s batted well in The Hundred, she’s shown she can hit it but I’m not sure if she’s ever been in a situation where she’s facing one of the best bowlers in world in Megan Schutt, meets her first ball, just carts her over the picket fence. Thank you very much.

“She had the cheat codes for everything the Strikers could throw at her in this game.

“Just the same area, Dane Van Niekerk hit three sixes in an over earlier. She did that to her and then to Megan Schutt as well, one of the best bowlers in the world, two sixes off her over.

“Absolutely glorious striking. Wonderful to watch.”

“Six sixes, this is extraordinary,” commentator Adam Peacock added.

Wong was given a life on 21 when Sarah Coyte dropped a sitter of a catch at mid on.

Her explosive innings came to and end when she was caught in two minds and was bowled by Wellington for 43 in the 19th over.

Once Wong was dismissed, an unlikely chase became impossible for the Thunder, who ultimately fell 18 runs short of the target off their 20 overs.

The loss leaves the Thunder on the bottom of the WBBL ladder on five points and will make it extremely difficult to finish in the top four and qualify for the finals.

The Strikers sit fifth on the table with a couple of games in hand on the rest of the teams.
