‘Can’t believe that’: Kiwi teammate collision stuns Test in utter ‘disaster’

New Zealand completely fell apart in the first Test against Australia after their best player got himself out in truly shambolic scenes.

'Disaster' as NZ's best batter run out in major blunder

So this is what it must feel like watching the All Blacks play the Wallabies.

Kane Williamson’s disastrous run-out ended all hope of a competitive Test series in a fresh reminder of why New Zealand haven’t beaten Australia in a series for three decades.

After bowling too short in the first hour of Day 1, New Zealand got themselves back in the game largely thanks to Matt Henry as Australia fell to 4/89 at one stage.

Cameron Green’s century was all class but the Kiwis only had themselves to blame for allowing Green to farm the strike with Josh Hazlewood as the pair put on 116 runs for the last wicket on Day 2.

Any total over 300 was going to be more than competitive and Australia were finally bowled out for 383 after the Kiwis seemingly refused to target the stumps.

Williamson and young gun Rachin Ravindra were in red hot form in the recent series against South Africa, sparking hope New Zealand would put up a fight against Australia’s world class bowling attack.

Disaster struck quickly in Wellington when Williamson effectively ran himself out for a duck in one of the ugliest dismissals you’ll ever see.

Williamson nudged a Mitchell Starc delivery down the ground and ran down the pitch for a single that was never on in an attempt to get off the mark.

But Will Young was caught ballwatching and unsure whether or not to run.

In a piece of car crash cricket, Young bumped Williamson into Starc, and Marnus Labuschagne easily threw down the stumps at the nonstrikers’ end.

Brendon Julian said on Fox Cricket: “I cannot believe it. A direct hit. How has that happened? Williamson, trying to get off the mark, is on his way.

“That sums it up for the Kiwis. A calamity out there in the middle.”

Another commentator said: “I can’t believe what I’ve just seen here. Oh no, bang bang they run into one other. That is just a disaster for New Zealand.”

Williamson has been in superb form, striking three centuries in the recent two-Test series against South Africa.

Tied on 32 Test centuries with Steve Smith, Williamson had a chance to leapfrog his Aussie counterpart if he reached triple figures.

Just moments later, New Zealand’s second best batter Rachin Ravindra was caught for a duck, leaving the hosts reeling at 3/12.

Australia have won every Test series against their Trans-Tasman rivals since 1993, and it appears that streak will continue for a few more years.
