Cameron White new BBL coach of Melbourne Renegades

A former Australian T20 skipper has been handed the job of lifting the perennial Big Bash battlers the Melbourne Renegades off the canvas.

Former Australian T20 captain Cameron White has been set the task of lifting the Melbourne Renegades off the bottom of the Big Bash ladder after being appointed as coach for the next three seasons.

White, Victoria’s longest-serving Sheffield Shield captain who also skippered the national one-day side, replaces David Saker who was sacked after the Renegades won just two games last season.

The Renegades also finished last in back-to-back BBL seasons after snaring the team’s lone title in the 2018-19 summer.

It marks a significant return to Victorian cricket for White who was dumped by the Renegades and moved to the Adelaide Strikers where his coaching journey began, finally leading him back to his home state.

“I’ve got so many great memories here, as a player and achieving success, so to be back in Renegades colours several years later is a thrill,” White said.

“The idea of working with this playing group, some really exciting players there, both young and experienced, is really exciting.

“I’m really looking forward to ripping in and starting my journey as coach.”

White, 40, made his playing debut for Victoria at just 17, was captain at 20 and went on to make more than 3000 international runs across 138 ODI and T20 games for Australia.

He also played four Tests and was part of the Renegades’ sole BBL title win.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have Cameron on-board,” Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said.

“He’s a favourite son at the ‘Gades, his connection with our cub runs deep having contributed heavily to our story with the bat and by achieving the ultimate success.

“His knowledge of the game, particularly T20 cricket, is also undisputed. We completed a global search process to fill this role. Cam stood out with his vision for the club and this playing group.”
