Brendon McCullum says he “can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer any time soon” with Australians amid Lord’s controversy

England coach Brendon McCullum said he “can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer any time soon” with the Aussie team after the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow.

Boos erupt post unsportsmanlike dismissal

England coach Brendon McCullum hit out at Australia’s ‘bitterly disappointing’ and hugely controversial stumping of Jonny Bairstow, declaring he “can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer any time soon” with the Aussie team.

Australian gloveman Alex Carey dismissed his England counterpart on the final day of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s by throwing down the stumps after a Cameron Green delivery, with Bairstow wandering out of his crease early.

It led to a bitter reaction from England players and fans, including MCC members at Lord’s who confronted Australian players in the iconic Long Room. Three members have now been suspended as the MCC investigates the drama.

McCullum told BBC Test Match Special after the game that he “can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer any time soon” with the Aussies.

“When you become older and more mature, you realise the game and the spirit of it is something you need to protect,” McCullum said.

“You have to make decisions in the moment, and they can have effects on games and people’s characters.

“By the letter of the law, he is out. Jonny was not trying to take a run. It is one of those difficult ones to swallow and you look at the small margins, it is incredibly disappointing.

“But lots of people will have their opinion on both sides of the fence. The most disappointing thing is that it will be the most talked about event of a great Test match.”

When Stuart Broad came to the crease, he was heard on the stump mics saying that Carey’s stumping was “literally the worst thing I’ve ever seen in cricket”.

The England seamer also told Carey: “You’ll forever be remembered for that.”

After the game, England captain Ben Stokes lashed the Aussies.

“If the shoe was on the other foot, I would probably just have to have a little think around the whole spirit of the game,” Stokes said.

“I would have had to have a real think around the spirit of the game, and would I want to potentially win a game with something like that happening — and it would be no.”
