Brendan Fevola has broken down with emotion in a raw radio segment about Shane Warne.

The footy great found a kindred spirit in Warne as two larger-than-life, larrikin princes of Melbourne — and the death of the cricketer at the age of 52 has rocked the popular radio personality.

Fevola’s emotional tribute to his friend follows a day where Warne’s close friends and teammates were also overcome with sadness at the sudden death of the Aussie sporting icon.

Sam Newman and former Aussie cricket captain Ricky Ponting both fought back tears when speaking publicly on Sunday.

Fevola was also clearly shaken when addressing Warne’s death on Monday morning on his regular Fox 101.9 breakfast radio show Fifi, Fev and Nick.

The former Carlton and Brisbane goal-kicker found it difficult to speak when addressing the loss being felt by Warne’s family, including son Jackson and his daughters Brooke and Summer.

The show had to cut to a radio break when Fevola’s voice began to fail him during a beautiful tribute.

“Everyone loved him as the cricketer and the larrikin Shane Warne, but I knew him as a father as well,” he said.

“And he loved his kids. Jacko, Brooke and Summer. And I can’t stop thinking about them. Those poor kids have lost their dad. They shared their lives with their dad. And now they have to grieve with the world about their dad.

“I just feel there’s nothing left we can do to help them. I just hope they know that their dad was one of the best people that anyone could ever meet. He was a great man. He was a good man.”

He said earlier in the segment Warne changed his life with a lesson he learned from the cricketer during their time together on Channel 10’s hit reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in 2016.

Both stars endured a series of scandals away from the field — but both remained loved public figures even during the moments when their actions created newspaper headlines.

“It wasn’t just his cricket. It was his off-field stuff and so many people can relate to that,” he said.

“And I could relate to it because I’ve stuffed up a lot in my life. But I learnt of Shane, you just own up to it and then people can’t have a crack at you. That’s his philosophy. He goes, ‘I just own up to it and I’m OK’.”

“He treated everyone the same. He made you feel so special. He made you feel like you were the king. He did that with everyone in the room and not many people can do that.

Fevola said he bawled his eyes out the entire day on Saturday and laments fans didn’t know who Warne really was — as the founder of the Shane Warne Foundation charity and a man who went out of his way to help drive charity campaigns.
