It will take four wins in a row but the Brisbane Heat are confident they can take out the BBL title

Winning momentum and the leg-spin of Marnus Labuschagne could take the Brisbane Heat all the way to the BBL title.

It took a last-gasp win for the Brisbane Heat just to make the Big Bash finals for the first time in four years and spinner Mitchell Swepson said winning momentum could carry them all the way to the title.

Swepson played a more than handy second fiddle to Marnus Labuschagne on Tuesday when the batting-machine’s haul of 3-11 against the Perth Scorchers on Tuesday helped the Heat to fourth spot and a home final at the Gabba on Friday.

Playing just his third game since December having spent most of the summer carrying drinks in the Australian Test squad, Swepson took two wickets himself.

After keeping his place in the Test squad, Swepson will head to off to South Africa for next month’s Test series, and wants to head there on a high.

The Heat will have to win four games in a row to lift the BBL trophy, but now armed with a two-pronged leg-spinning attack, Swepson said anything could happen.

“Yesterday we spoke about it that it was five games in a row we have to win to win this thing,” Swepson said.

“We knew everything was on the line (on Tuesday) and it‘s the same from here on out.

“It‘s always said that momentum is massive in this tournament. A couple of back-to-back wins to go into the final series is great for us.

“It’s our first finals in four years so we’re just a really excited group and can’t wait to get back to Brissie.”

The Gabba won’t have any crowd restrictions in place, meaning a capacity turnout is more than likely, which Swepson said played in to the home team’s hands.

With three wins from five games in Brisbane this season, including a take-down of the table-topping Sydney Sixers, Swepson said it was “definitely a good advantage for us”.

“We play great cricket at the Gabba ,” he said.

“And also helps when you get 30,000-plus cheering for us. That will be a huge factor.”

So will the spin of Labuschagne who now has six wickets in three games for the Heat since joining the team after the Test series against India and looms as Brisbane’s not-so-secret weapon.

“It‘s great he’s getting an opportunity for starters. He hasn’t bowled many overs in the past,” Swepson said.

“It’s great for him to step up to the plate.

“We know what he can do with the bat but to play that role with the ball as well is huge.

“We’re in a position we haven’t been in for a while so definitely want to grab this opportunity while we are here and make the most of it and win this thing. ”
