Belinda Clarke responds after being overlooked following Maxwell’s double century

An Australian cricket icon has hit back after her historic achievements were overlooked following Glenn Maxwell’s double century.

Maxwell produces the GREATEST ODI knock ever

Australian cricket star Belinda Clark has responded after being completely overlooked following Glenn Maxwell’s heroics.

Maxwell smashed a matchwinning 201 not out in a knock for the ages against Afghanistan in a World Cup thriller that took the five-time champions into the semi-finals.

The absurd display was quickly dubbed the “greatest innings ever” as he rewrote the record books with the outing.

Multiple outlets, us included, and social media accounts were quick to spruik Maxwell’s double century as the highest score by an Aussie in an ODI.

Fans however were quick to point out the embarrassing oversight with Clark’s 229 against Denmark in 1997 appearing to be wiped from the history books.

Clark’s name began trending in the hours after Maxwell’s display with fans coming to her side by calling out those who were touting the innings as the highest ODI score by an Australian.

One user wrote: “A woman can have a statue but she will not get credit for her on-field achievements. Belinda Clark is and will always remain the first Australian to score a double century in ODIs. It’s not that hard to check, honestly.”

Another added: “Belinda Clark was the first Australian and world player to score an ODI double ton.”

Clark responded to the oversight and said audiences need to respect gender when discussing these types of feats.

“My view is we need to respect performances regardless of gender. There is space for everyone. The error however is generally one-way traffic. Women have been playing cricket internationally since 1934,” she told Yahoo Sport Australia.

“I think it’s great and I’m pleased for Glenn and the team. It’s (comparison with her innings) a talking point to further provide recognition of women’s sport. 1997 was a long time ago so I welcome him to the club.”

Maxwell’s innings went to a whole new level after he fought off violent cramps that severely restricted his movement.

He was left hobbling through at the end of overs for a single to keep strike and continue his onslaught.

“Horrific, I feel shocking,” Maxwell said after his innings. “It was quite hot when we were fielding, I haven’t done a whole lot of high intensity exercise in the heat. It got a hold of me today, I was lucky to stick it out until the end.”

But nothing was going to slow him down as he fought off his own body trying to slow him down by lifting the Aussies to victory.
