Steve Smith 'absolutely furious' with teammate after mix-up in first Test vs Sri Lanka

Former Australian skipper Steve Smith was left seeing red after a monumental blunder sent him packing in Sri Lanka.

Day one of the opening Test has come to an end with Australia holding a commanding position over Sri Lanka.

Nathan Lyon and Mitch Swepson did the damage with the ball in the first half of the day after Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and chose to bat.

The spin duo combined for eight wickets as the first innings for Sri Lanka ended with only 212 runs on the board.

The Aussies got off to a solid start with the bat before they threw away wickets late in the day with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith being dismissed cheaply.

Smith was seething after he was left stranded in the middle of the pitch following a disastrous mix-up with Usman Khawaja. The day finished with the Aussies sitting at 3/98.

Recap the day's action below.

Updates

Steve Smith run-out in shocking mix-up

Australia has squandered its strong start, throwing away wickets late on Day 1.

Marnus Labuschagne was caught attempting a reverse sweep before Steve Smith was run-out for six after a disastrous mix-up with Usman Khawaja.

Smith nudged a ball into the covers and didn't attempt a run, but Khawaja called for a quick single before changing his mind once Smith was halfway down the pitch.

Smith turned on his heels and dived for the crease but it was in vain.

He was furious at Khawaja and trudged off the pitch with dirt all over his shirt, shaking his head and muttering under his breath.

"Steve Smith is absolutely furious," the commentator said.

Warner departs after strong start

David Warner is out for 25 off 24 balls as Australia gets off to a strong start in its first innings.

Warner came out firing and switched from his helmet to a floppy hat in just the third over of the innings as he smacked boundaries before he was out LBW to Ramesh Mendis.

Usman Khawaja is 30 not out and batting steadily.

Nathan Lyon on fire, Sri Lanka all out

Sri Lanka is all out for 212 after Nathan Lyon wasted no time cleaning up the tail after tea.

Mitch Swepson claimed the final scalp of Jeffrey Vandersay to finish with three wickets.

But the hero was Lyon, who finished with figures of 5/90 off 25 overs.

It's his 20th five-wicket haul in Test cricket and in a nice piece of symmetry, he managed the feat at the same ground in Galle where he took his first five-for on Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2011.

It's Lyon's ninth five-wicket haul in Asia and now with 432 Test wicket to his name, he has moved past Richard Hadlee for the 12th most of all time.

Lyon strikes straight after tea

Nathan Lyon has struck twice in quick succession after the tea break as Australia looks to mop up Sri Lanka's tail.

Lyon trapped Ramesh Mendis plumb LBW but the umpire ruled it not out. The Aussies successfully sent it upstairs to DRS, which showed the ball was cannoning into middle stump.

The off-spinner then got the key scalp of wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, who struck a superb knock of 58 at a run a ball before edging through to Alex Carey.

Another one bites the dust

Nathan Lyon has put a stop to the onslaught by removing Angelo Matthews on 39.

Matthews and Niroshan Dickwella put the foot down after the locals lost their fifth wicket as the looked to put the pressure back on the Aussies. But Lyon held his nerve and eventually claimed the wicket of Matthews as he turned one off his hip into the waiting hands of David Warner.

Swepson snaps 514-ball drought

Mitch Swepson has Sri Lanka in a world of hurt.

An almost unplayable delivery from Mitch Swepson drifted through the air, landing on middle and leg before ripping across the face of Dhananjaya De Silva's bat and claiming the edge. Alex Carey accepted the gift of a delivery in his gloves as the Aussies looked to tighten their grip.

The very next ball, Swepson struck again. Another peach of a delivery landed on middle and leg and left Dinesh Chandimal in all sorts as the ball caught the outside edge and was snapped up by David Warner.

Unfortunately Swepson's hat-trick didn't come about, but the Aussies are in full control with the locals sitting at 5/101.

Swepson had endured a lengthy delay in claiming Test scalps, throwing down 514 deliveries between his second wicket and then his third.

Of course it only took one ball to then move up to four Test wickets.

Warner blinder removes skipper

James McKern

The Aussies have sent Dimuth Karunaratne packing after a piece of magic from David Warner at second slip.

A perfectly placed delivery by Nathan Lyon caught the inside edge of Karunaratne's bat and sent the ball clattering into his pads, Aussies around the bat went up for the LBW shout but as the ball popped up … Warner dove fully extended to his left and got his hand under the ball to take the catch.

The call was sent upstairs by the umpires to check and eventually confirmation came that Karunaratne was on his way, thanks to the brilliance of David Warner.

Aussie blunder before lunch

James McKern

Sri Lanka have scrapped their way to the first break of the opening Test with the locals sitting at 2/62.

The Aussies had a chance for a third wicket right before lunch when Mitch Swepson thumped a delivery into the pads of Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne. Alex Carey and Steve Smith went up for the Aussies, but under the helmet Marnus Labuschagne thought he had heard glove and skipper Pat Cummins, perhaps gun shy after already burning a review in Nathan Lyon's second spell, opted not to send it upstairs. His second mistake in the morning session.

Unfortunately for the tourists the review showed three red lights and Karunaratne survived.

"Should have used it again. Australia miss out on three reds on the stroke of lunch. Pretty even session. Aussies will be happy, Lyon deserved a wicket," Lachlan McKirdy wrote.

Australia gets two early wickets

Pat Cummins got the crucial first break through when he dismissed Pathum Nissanka in the 13th over and then Mitchell Starc came through with the goods minutes after the first drinks break.

Cummins' slightly short delivery trapped Nissanka on the crease and the Sri Lankan opener offered his bat as the ball jumped and it collected his outside edge on the way through to Alex Carey behind the stumps.

Nissanka went for 23 with Sri Lanka 1/38.

They were 2/42 a few overs later after Starc got a pitched-up delivery to angle away from Kusal Mendis.

The batter was enticed into slashing cover drive, but the delivery took his outside edge and landed in the hands of Alex Carey.

'Wowza': Nathan Lyon delivery says everything

Nathan Lyon's first ball showed exactly how crazy the Galle pitch is going to get.

The Aussie spinner was brought into the attack just five overs into the match and his first ball showed why.

His gem of a delivery showed, drift, turn and bounce and was agonisingly close to knocking over Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne.

Bowling around the wicket, Lyon's ball pitched in line with middle stump before turning sharply to miss the outside edge and the top of off-stump.

The added bounce caught keeper Alex Carey unprepared and it went on to smash into his face. He was not happy.

The drama continued in Lyon's second spell as the Aussies appeared to make a big mistake with burning their first review of the Test.

Cummins reviewed a decision after his appeal for an inside edge was rejected by the on-field umpire. Replays showed Kusal Mendis' bat and gloves were nowhere near the ball before it struck him on the pads and landed in Marnus Labuschagne's hands.
