West Indies quick Jayden Seales explains Pat Cummins send off and Sam Konstas plan

West Indies paceman Jayden Seales has sought to downplay his send-off to Australian captain Pat Cummins, and revealed the technical flaw they are targetting in Sam Konstas’ game.

West Indies paceman Jayden Seales has sought to downplay his send-off to Australian captain Pat Cummins while confirming that the Windies looked to exploit a perceived weakness in Sam Konstas’ game “as much as possible.”

Seales took 5-60 as Australia was bowled out for 180 on the opening day of the Frank Worrell Trophy series at Kensington Oval, only for the hosts to plummet to 4-57 by stumps on a pitch that Aussie vice-captain Travis Head conceded had been tougher for batting than either side expected.

Shamar Joseph (4-46) did the bulk of the early damage for the home team, decimating the Aussie top order despite having three catches dropped off his bowling.

Joseph set the tone by dismissing the recalled Sam Konstas lbw with an inswinging delivery, the type of ball that has repeatedly troubled the teen opener during his professional career to date.

Speaking post-play, Seales confirmed that the Windies had been aware of Konstas’ issue.

“Just the videos that the analyst provided for us and watching the Australia and India series, he looked like he had a bit of a weakness with the ball coming back, and we just knew that we needed to exploit it as much as possible,” Seales said.

Seales could meanwhile find himself in hot water with match referee Javagal Srinath after pointing Cummins in the direction of the pavilion following the Aussie No. 8’s brisk counterattacking innings of 28.

“It was a bit of a send-off, not really meaning anything really. It was more a bit of frustration, he played a couple of good shots off me and I just showed him to the dressing room, there wasn’t really anything in it,” Seales said.

Head top scored with a typically cavalier 59, saying after play that neither side had believed the pitch would be so confronting for batters.

“Yeah, challenging day. Yeah, different wicket probably than what both teams expected. I think both teams were going to bat so it looked a really nice wicket, and it may spin later in the game, but yeah, two good quality seam attacks, and we’ve got something out of it. So yeah, it’s been challenging,” Head said.

All 14 wickets on day one fell to pace, with Mitchell Starc removing both West Indian openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell with the new ball.
