Australia coach Justin Langer thinks Will Pucovski can have a long career despite a ninth concussion

Justin Langer is convinced batting dynamo Will Pucovski will have a “productive” international career but concedes he is worried about the rising star.

Pucovski is back home with family in Melbourne, recovering from the concussion that cost him a Test debut against India in Adelaide this week.

Cricket Australia‘s concussion protocols will determine whether Pucovski could be ready for what could be a dream debut in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

Will Pucovski is recovering at home from this brutal blow.

The 22-year-old suffered a ninth concussion, not all batting or cricket related, when he was felled by a short ball while batting for Australia A last week.

Pucovski had to be helped from the field after being struck in the helmet by Indian bowler Kartik Tyagi in the last over of the day in the tour game at Drummoyne Oval in Sydney.

Langer, who suffered his own concussions during his 105-Test career, conceded the matter was concerning.

But he added there was “no reason” Pucovski still wouldn’t have a long cricket career.

“Will has had multiple concussions now. We’re obviously keeping a close eye on him. He’s back home with his family at the moment,” Langer said.

“I‘m worried about Will because he got hit again the other day, and he almost certainly would have played this first Test match, so I feel for him.

“He‘ll recover well then we just have to keep following the protocols.

“If they go through the stages and are fit for selection then we have a choice to select them or not … if they don‘t, it’s taken out of our hands.”

Pucovski has had nine concussions now.

Rookie all-rounder Cameron Green is also in line for a Test debut in Adelaide should be recover from a concussion he sustained while bowling at the SCG last weekend.

In the same game Australia A bowler Harry Conway was also subbed out of the match after suffering a concussion while batting.

But amid calls from some for the bouncer to be banned, Langer didn’t agree that was necessary.

“It’s part of the game. Unfortunately, we get hit,” the former opener said.

“I can only go from personal experience, what I‘ve felt and also seen.

“But if you can get through it then there‘s no reason why you can’t have a long and very, very successful domestic and hopefully international career.”
