‘Alien’: Glenn Maxwell rewrites record books all over again

Although the world knows exactly what Glenn Maxwell can do, the Aussies master blaster has once again rewritten the record books.

Glenn Maxwell has blasted the fastest T20 international century in Australia in an absolutely scintillating knock at Adelaide Oval.

Australia claimed a 34-run victory over the West Indies in the second T20I but the visitors were hardly ever in the chase after Maxwell once again showed off his inhuman abilities with a cricket bat.

Maxwell was unstoppable, unloading 12 fours and eight sixes, bringing up his century in just 50 balls.

Incredibly, it’s only the fifth fastest hundred in T20Is for Australia — and Maxwell’s third fastest.

However, it is the fastest to have been scored in Australia.

In T20 International cricket, Australia have scored just 10 centuries — half of which Maxwell has tallied himself.

He also moves alongside India’s Rohit Sharma for the most centuries in T20I cricket, although Maxwell has done it in 93 innings, compared to Sharma’s 143 innings.

The total of 4/241 was also the fourth highest score by Australia in T20Is — and also the biggest Australia has scored at home, beating the 2/233 scored against Sri Lanka at Adelaide Oval in 2019.

Speaking immediately after the innings, Maxwell said it was “good fun out there”.

“I just gave myself a chance, it’s a really nice wicket,” Maxwell said on Fox Cricket. “It’s always been good batting here at the Adelaide Oval. We saw during the Big Bash with how good the wickets were. It’s nice to be able to cash in and spend most of the time out there.”

Maxwell said his parents were in the crowd tonight and that he usually struggles when they’ve been at the ground.

“I’ve had a few cursed Adelaide trips with them coming over — I got injured, I think I broke my leg the last time they tried to come over to Adelaide,” Maxwell laughed.

After losing the early wicket of Josh Inglis, Mitch Marsh and David Warner kept the runs ticking over.

Marsh ensured the Aussies stayed at 10 runs an over in the powerplay, hitting 29 off just 12 balls.

But after his dismissal, Maxwell took over, putting on 82 with Marcus Stoinis, who contributed just 16.

Maxwell and Tim David (31 not out off 14) then put on 95 in the last 38.

It was a bridge too far for the West Indies, who put in a valient, if futile, effort with the bat.

While the played at the right tempo particularly early, regular wickets saw the visitors drop to 6/110.

Rovman Powell’s 36-ball 63 kept some hope alive for the visitors, but it wound up being a bridge too far as Australia wrapped up the series with a match to play.

There were bizarre scenes late in the match after Australia didn’t seem to appeal for a run out for the last wicket, but with a lead of 50 with 10 balls remaining, it was a mere formality and didn’t impact the result.
