Australian sporting icon Adam Gilchrist has revealed the greatest sledge he encountered on the cricket field, which was directed at the brother of his former teammates, Steve and Mark Waugh.

The Waugh twins are considered among the all-time greats of Australian sport, but casual fans may be unaware their younger brother Dean was a talented cricketer as well.

The third Waugh brother represented New South Wales in one Sheffield Shield match in March 1996, scoring 19 in the first innings against Queensland.

He also represented the Blues and South Australia in a handful of List A matches, but spent the majority of his playing career plying his trade at grade level.

During a rare period when the Australian players were not needed at international or state level, the Waugh twins found time to play for Bankstown District Cricket Club alongside their younger brother.

Gilchrist, who will commentate for Fox Cricket during the Men’s T20 World Cup, was donning the gloves for the opposition, and the legendary wicketkeeper overheard a brutal remark by former New South Wales seamer Richard Stobo.

“We’ve managed to get Stephen out, we managed to dismiss Mark out,” Gilchrist told news.com.au’s I’ve Got News For You podcast.

“But then Dean Waugh, the younger brother who had huge expectations and obviously pressure on him to try and live up to the standard of his famous older twins.

“He wasn’t playing particularly well. He was looking a bit dicey and edging and bowled off a no-ball and so on.

“And then finally the opening bowler came down and looked at him and said, ‘You must be the adopted one’.

“It’s sensitive to some I’m sure, but I thought it was quite a funny comment.

“Too much sledging can involve foul language and just abuse so I thought that was a funny, well thought out sledge.

“Dean of course played first-class cricket, and did very well. So he forged his own career.”

The youngest Waugh brother, Daniel, also represented the New South Wales under-17s team.

Australia will face trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand at the SCG on Saturday evening for their T20 World Cup opener, with the first ball scheduled for 6pm AEDT.

“They haven’t won here in (15) games. They’re probably one closer to winning eventually,” Australian spinner Adam Zampa told reporters on Wednesday.

“The thing about New Zealand is they’re always in the contest. They’re the kind of team that will scratch their way to 165 and then defend it with a great bowling attack.

“Up against New Zealand, it’s never easy. They’re always in the game. You can never take New Zealand lightly.”

Fox Cricket, which is available on Foxtel and Kayo Sports, is the only place you can watch every ball of the Men’s T20 World Cup.
