‘Absolutely smitten’: Nathan Lyon and wife Emma share secret baby news

On the same day he joined one of cricket’s most exclusive clubs, Nathan Lyon has revealed he is “smitten” with a new arrival to his family.

What a year it’s been for Nathan Lyon.

He helped secure a famous win in the first Ashes Test in Edgbaston before a calf injury at Lord’s ruled him out of the remainder of the series.

It’s perhaps no coincidence Australia won the two games he played in.

The beloved spinner made a welcome return to the Australian side in Perth for the first Test of the summer against Pakistan and everything felt right in the world again.

Lyon finished with five wickets for the match and claimed his 500th Test wicket on Sunday when he trapped Faheem Ashraf lbw.

The 36-year-old is just the eighth man to pass 500 Test wickets and joins Glenn McGrath (563 wickets) and Shane Warne (708) as the only three Australians to have achieved the feat.

But the good news didn’t end there. Speaking on Channel 7 after Australia’s 360-run win, Lyon and his wife Emma separately revealed they had welcomed a baby earlier this year.

Mel McLaughlin said to Lyon: “You talk about your wife and I bumped into you at the SCG a couple of weeks ago and you were absolutely smitten with a new baby.

“You couldn’t gush about her enough, you’re madly in love. Beautiful stuff in terms of the family side.”

The couple had been spotted in September with their new bundle of joy but haven’t yet shared the happy news on social media.

Emma Lyon cheered her husband on in the stands in Perth and also confirmed they had welcomed a baby.

“We’ve had a baby, rehab, the Ashes, India — it’s been non stop,” she told Channel 7’s Trent Copeland.

“To have him home for a couple of months was really lovely but not on those terms (Lyon’s calf injury). To see him out there today is just amazing.”

Emma said Lyon is “very down to earth, loves nothing more than walking the dog every morning, every night, barbecue in the backyard. Life is just very simple at home with the kids.”

The couple are absolutely smitten.

The offspinner said he was “smitten” and spoke glowingly about the support of Emma and his family and friends.

“Life’s very happy at the moment,” he said.

“I am absolutely smitten. That’s the joy of being a parent I guess. All you try and do is make them proud and happy and hopefully one day when they grow up and see what dad’s been able to do they’ll be pretty happy.

“One of my biggest weapons is the amount of love and support I’ve got from all my family. “They’re my biggest supporters. You see that reaction there, that speaks volumes. I can’t do what I do without those guys.”

Lyon shares two daughters, Harper and Milla, with his ex Mel.

Lyon and McCarthy started dating in 2017, their relationship being made public when they were spotted kissing in Perth. In 2020 they bought their first house together in Sydney. They married last year.
