Were performers at Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony lip syncing?
SHE looked absolutely stunning - and sounded it too. But when Christine Anu performed on stage, viewers had questions.
IT MIGHT be her island home and despite our doubts, we have an answer over whether performers including Christine Anu and Ricki-Lee lip synced during their opening performance at the Commonwealth Games.
Officials tell news.com.au that despite doubts, the performers sang live.
So they tell us, any way.
I’ll be the first to say I love Christine Anu, but as I was proudly singing My Island Home in the office while watching the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, I spotted something a little, well, off. Christine’s lips didn’t seem to match the sound. Something was wrong here. Right? Wrong, apparently.
Amazing from @anuchristine as she joins Mau Power at the #GC2018 Opening Ceremony, celebrating Australia's indigenous culture. #7CommGames pic.twitter.com/mPcQi7Ikm9

Devastated, I took to Twitter to confirm my suspicions, and it seems I wasn’t the only one who appeared to be a little suss on the sync.
It was like the devastating moment I realised that the Spice Girls weren’t actually singing. Ever. But this time, it was closer to home. My Island Home.

Despite the fantastic performance it was plagued with questions by other onlookers, not just myself, asking what was going on. Did Christine just shatter our dreams?
Wait, is Christine Anu not singing this live? #OpeningCeremony

Christine Anu may explode shes lip synching that hard and I'm here for it #GC2018

Then the same thing happened with Ricki-Lee. People were peeved. How could this talented singer, who became such a success thanks to a talent show which forced performers to sing live, lip sync?
Was Ricki Lee seriously lip syncing and could no one find anyone to sing our National Anthem live at the opening ceremony? #qldpol #CommonwealthGames2018 #7CommGames

Iâm kinda bummed Ricki-Lee is lip syncing #GC2018

If this was Ru Paulâs drag race Ricki Lee would go home because that lip singing was horrendous

Intrigued, I went straight to Commonwealth Games media reps, who told me this: “The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Ceremony Team advise that Christine Anu did not lip sync during her performance tonight at the Opening Ceremony of Gold Coast 2018.”
Interesting.
When I questioned if any of the performer’s at the Opening Ceremony were miming, I was told: “There is no lip syncing and it is live.”
So how does that explain the footage? Are we all just a bunch of untrusting Aussies sullied by Britney Spears and the Spice Girls? We’ll let you be the judge.
@GC2018 @thecgf #CommonwealthGames2018 #OpeningCeremony will be known as the #LipSync event of the year #RickiLee #ChristineAnu

Christine Anu would be told to Sashay Away with that shitty lip synching ð (I do love her but that was terrible) #CommonwealthGames2018

The only possible answer Commonwealth Games media reps could hypothesise was the fact there was a “delay between the stadium and the press screen”, though whether that affected viewers nationally is yet to be seen. Though a reader who attended the rehearsal of the opening told news.com.au: “We were at the rehearsal of the Commonwealth Games Opening on Monday night and they were singing live but there was a delay even with the speakers.”
Conspiracy theorists unite.
Watch any live stadium performance, sound travels slower than light so what you see when someone talks is already (imperceptably) out of sync. When larger distances are involved and amplification equipment/mixing desks it's even more evident and you may notice.
