Will Mitch Larkin be able to claim a huge haul of five gold medals?

CATE Campbell, Kyle Chalmers, Emma McKeon and Ariarne Titmus were all expected to dominate in the pool at the Commonwealth Games. But will it be Mitch Larkin who emerges as our most decorated swimmer?

Australia remains at the top of the medal tally

These were the names that were expected to dominate at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre this week.

All have flourished to a degree, winning multiple Games gold.

But could it be Mitch Larkin that is Australia’s Superman in the pool?

Like mild-mannered Clark Kent, Larkin slips through life largely unnoticed. But he will end the meet as one of Australia’s most decorated swimmers, with five gold medals a possibility.

Larkin, who already has three gold after becoming the first man to win the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke treble at the Commonwealth Games, qualified fastest for the final of the 200m individual medley tonight and will swim the backstroke leg of the medley relay.

Larkin’s squadmate Ariarne Titmus is already a multiple gold medal winner at these Games after adding the 800m freestyle title to her 4x200m freestyle relay win earlier in the meet.

And she will look to add a third gold tonight after snaring lane four in tonight’s 400m final following a comfortable heat swim.

“After last night I didn’t feel as fresh in the heats as I would like to but I just tried to save as much energy as possible and get through and I’m pretty happy with the heat swim,” she said.

“Tonight’s my main event, so I’m just going to try and rest up as best I can today and try and do a good one tonight.

“After the 800m last night I was pretty excited but I had to calm myself down and contain the emotions because it’s my main event today and I didn’t want to ruin it by getting overexcited about last night.

“I just have to hold it together for one more day and then I can relax.”

Titmus led a trio of Australians into the final, with Mikkayla Sheridan and Jess Ashwood also qualifying.

Australia’s para swimmers have excelled at this meet and more gold could come tonight, with Lakeisha Patterson qualifying fastest for the S8 50m freestyle and Timothy Hodge leading a trio of Aussies through the heat in the S9 100m backstroke.

Competition is over for the quartet of Bradley Woodward, Matt Wilson, David Morgan and Jack Cartwright after they helped qualify Australia for the medley relay final tonight.

Cate Campbell and Bronte Campbell continue to dominate in the pool.

They will be replaced by Larkin, Jake Packard, Grant Irvine and Chalmers but will receive any medal that team wins tonight.

Speculation continues over whether Cate or Bronte Campbell will join Emily Seebohm, Georgia Bohl and Emma McKeon in the women’s medley relay after last night’s shock 100m freestyle final win to the younger Campbell sister.
