Royal honour for Aussie pool queen

IN 1982, Queen Elizabeth II hung the 400m gold medal around a delighted Tracey Wickham’s neck. Thirty-six years on, it will be Wickham who has the honour of presenting the gold medal for the cherished event.

Swim stars choose Brisbane to bond

THE country’s best swimmers descend on Queensland’s capital this weekend to head into Commonwealth Games camp – and Cate and Bronte Campbell say expect a few surprises on the podium on the Gold Coast this year.

Meanest and friendliest blokes in the pool

THEY shaved their heads, they won swimming gold medals and one of their members even tried to break Rod Marsh’s beer drinking record. The “Mean Machine” were part of our 80s swimming resurgence.

Adelaide switch perfect for Travis

TRAVIS Mahoney says relocating to Adelaide has given him the belief to swim for a maiden Commonwealth Games medal on the Gold Coast, after joining three other SA-based athletes on the Australian team.

Titmus books Games place

ARIARNE Titmus has become the first able-bodied swimmer to book a place on the team for the Commonwealth Games, taking down Commonwealth record-holder Emma McKeon in the 200m freestyle.

Magnussen ‘still swimming’s alpha male’

HE may be reigning Olympic champion but Kyle Chalmers says James Magnussen is the top dog ahead of the Commonwealth Games trials and hopes some more trash talk from the man that calls himself The Missile will secure him gold again.

McKeon’s keen for fly double

EMMA McKeon will tackle the 200m double on the opening night of the Commonwealth Games swimming trials, confident she will not be sacrificing her pet freestyle event for a tilt at the 200m butterfly.

Larkin may expand Games program

MITCH Larkin is toying with the idea of adding the individual medley to his Commonwealth Games trials program in a bid to maintain the hunger that will fuel his Olympic redemption.
